Mr Mean is number 19 in the Mr Men collection. He is a sausage shape and is blue in colour. He has a yellow round nose.

The cover of the book is white and has a picture of Mr Mean and the title at the top in black lettering. The back cover of the book is also white and has smaller pictures showing the other characters available in the collection.

THE STORY

The story starts by telling us a bit about Mr Mean. He lives in a very run down house which is in need of painting and new windows. The inside of the house is the same, there are no carpets, curtains or pictures. Mr Mean made his furniture from old orange boxes and he even complained about the price of the nails. He is so mean for Christmas last year he even gave his brother a piece of coal. Mr Mean was very rich as he never spent his money, he kept it all hidden in a box in his kitchen.

One day when Mr Mean was eating a gloomy meal in his gloomy kitchen there was a knock at his door, when he opened it he found a rather fat wizard standing there. The wizard asked if Mr Mean would let him have a glass of water as it was a very hot day indeed. Mr Mean said no and he shut the door and returned to his kitchen.

As he got back to his kitchen he found the wizard was there, Mr Mean asked how he got there and the wizard explained that it was by magic. The wizard said that Mr Mean must be very poor as he looked around and saw the state of the house, Mr mean said that yes he was. The wizard said that perhaps he could help. He pulled a box to sit down on but the box did not move. The wizard pulled harder and then tipped up and out fell all of Mr Mean's money.

The wizard said that Mr Mean was naughty and a mean man and that he needed to be taught a lesson but Mean did not hear him as he was trying to pick up all of his money.

Would the wizard teach Mr Mean a lesson and make him become less mean or would he spend the rest of his life being mean?

MY OPINION

This is another fun book in the Mr Men collection. The story has been written in nice simple and easy to understand words so it is appropriate for children of all ages.

The book is set out in a very simple way with the writing on plain white pages on the left hand side of the book and the illustrations on the right hand side. The illustrations are all nice and bright and help to tell the story and keep younger children involved in the book.

The writing which has been used is a bit on the small side so it was discourage new readers from reading the book on their own but with encouragement these are great books and very easy for children to read alone.

The story can be read in about 5 minutes so this makes an ideal bed time book.
