I was introduced to this series of books at school but they are still as exciting as ever. Last year saw a TV series based on the books which were very well produced but still not a patch on the written word. Hornblower starts life at sea as a very young midshipman during the time of Nelson and the tales of life at sea have you gripped from one adventure to the next. Often they are stranded in impossible situations but Hornblower has some original ideas to extricate them. Very graphic at times but quite justified in portraying the hardships endured and the death or glory fighting. There is a small love interest but Hornblower's heart is happiest at sea and most of the plot is based there. If you love tall ships and adventure you'll love these tales.
