This is somewhat of a departure from my usual reviews since I believe it is my first on a household product, and anyone who has read any of my previous reviews may well have worked out that I am far from domesticated and plan on remaining so for sometime to come.
But occasionally I am spurred in to taking action around the house and this morning was one of those occasions. While in my shower before work I realised that the bath was almost full to my ankles. Not so odd really since on more than one occasion recently I've left the plug in or been stood over the plug hole (please tell me I'm not the only one to be so dozy at 5.30am!) but on this occasion sadly the water I was paddling in was not to be so easily drained.
Somehow the plug has become totally blocked up. Annoying and probably very unhygienic. So on my way home from work this evening I stopped in at my local Asda to try and find something to unblock it, now usually I would use a delapidatory cream since most of the blockage is likely to be hair, one of the perils of having two long haired females in a house, as well as one who has suddenly realised she has less than a week to deal with the forest which has sprouted on her legs (yup its only a few days until my OH comes back and you could almost plait my leg hair!). But when in Asda I thought that maybe for once I should check the prices of the delapidatory cream compared to a product actually designed to unblock plugs. To my surprise this was actually cheaper by almost 50p, costing me around £3.20.
So having returned home the directions on the back tell me to pour the whole bottle in to the bath and then rinse in about 15 minutes, given that this is a pretty bad blockage I actually only poured around 1/3 of the bottle down the plug, and most of it sat in the bath itself. I also left it for closer to an hour. By which time the liquid seemed to be just about gone from the bath, running the taps initially it looked as though more product would be needed as the water once again was just sitting there looking scummy. But then there were a few bubbles and the water began to slowly drain away. Once the first lot of water was fully drained I ran the taps again to ascertain whether further pourings would be needed, again in bubbled slightly and then the water just disappeared down the drain as though the blockage had never been there!
The smell is slightly bleachey but not over poweringly so, and it is a fairly thick 'gloopy' liquid. As I mentioned I didnt use the recommended amount since it says you should use the whole bottle for one blockage but to me that is a ridiculously expensive way to clear a block, though equally if it is likely to be a hair blockage a cream like VEET should do the trick and is frequently cheaper (especially if you can find an own brand version). It is safe to use on almost all materials used in sinks, baths and plugs although there are one or two it might damage though it will not damage your actual plumbing system.
Its safe to say that this is something I would highly recommend keeping around the house, as with all cleaning products though it should be kept out of the way of children and animals (one and the same surely?). But it does have a 'child safe' cap, now I hear rumours that these are easy to open, yet every time I come across one I end up fighting with them for at least 5 minutes so also pretty adult safe. It also shouldnt be allowed to touch bare skin and any clothes it comes in to contact with are likely to get bleached.
Advantages: It really does work Disadvantages: Highly corrosive
...had seen the adverts for Mr Muscle Sink and Plughole Unblocker on TV without really taking much notice, but such is the power of advertising that it stores these little snippets of information somewhere in the brain, ready to be retrieved as and when appropriate. So within a matter of seconds of thinking "Oh no, blocked drain" my subconscious kicked into action and like a word association game I though "Oh, I think I need some of that Mr Muscle unblocker ... ...then I would happy.
Mr Muscle Sink and Plughole Unblocker comes in a bright Orange coloured plastic bottle. It can be found amongst the bleaches, disinfectants and other household cleaning products, but to be honest since I was not sure exactly what I was looking for it did not instantly leap out at me.
As with all products of this kind it is always important to read the instructions on the bottle before using for the first time. I was aware that ...

Advantages: Works, easy, quick, convenient, known brand Disadvantages: Corrosive, pricey for one plughole
To my mind Mr Muscle Sink and Plughole Unblocker is one of those products that when you find it, it is a God send. Unfortunately it is a little pricey but it works. Over the last couple of weeks I have noticed our bath water has not been draining away as quickly as it used to. We have one of those loose plughole filters which usually stops too much yuk finding it's way down the drain but obviously some has got through. This morning as I showered, ... ...I resolved to buy some Mr Muscle, when I popped to town at lunch. I went into Wilko and bought a bottle of Mr Muscle sink and plughole unblocker and it cost £3.95 for a 500ml bottle. I told you it was pricey.
Wilkinson's had a few other brands, and makes, in this department but the trouble is I do not know if they will work. One appeared to be caustic soda which I could buy from our local DIY. However I think this is too harsh for inside the home ...

Advantages: Easy to use Disadvantages: Very expensive and caused a larger blockage
...think twice before using the Mr Muscle Sink and Plughole Unblocker. All my clothes smelt of Cyanide (almond smell) for the next few washes.
CONCLUSION
So, the Mr Muscle Sink and Plughole Unblocker worked to some degree - it did dissolve some of the gunk but then just caused a bigger blockage further down.
Fix it the old-fashioned way with a plunger! ...

Advantages: Powers through total blockages, even through standing water Disadvantages: None!
...blocked drains. I came across Mr Muscle sink and drain unblocker which seemed like what I was looking for.
At Tesco this bright orange bottle is priced at £3.46 for a 500ml bottle, but this would be significantly cheaper than a plumbers bill so was worth a go! The instructions on the back stated that the entire bottle should be poured slowly down the drain. As the blockage seemed quite severe I erred on the side of caution and bought two, one to ... ...sink so that the blockage could be tackled from both ends! The bottle says that it will work even through standing water and takes only 15 minutes to work, although for tougher clogs the product should be left overnight. It states that it will clear total blockages without causing damage to pipes or septic tanks.
I poured one bottle down the shower drain, which still had a lot of standing water, and the other in the sink. 15 minutes later there ...

Advantages: Does what it says on the bottle! Disadvantages: Keep well away from the kids!
...for shouting their adverts - Mr Muscle or Cillit Bang! Each makes me want to reach for the aspirins and lie down in a dark room.
Anyway, with the speed of lightening the knife (which I had attacked the sink hole with) was flung and the bottle was snatched from the cupboard, fingers crossed there would be enough left to do the unblocking, I had that sinking feeling (sink? sinking?? oh never mind) there was only a little bit left in the bottle, why ... ...plastic bottle with Mr Muscle in big letters, you can't miss it and at the moment they are offering 100% free!
Also I have ticked good value for money, only because I didn't use half the amount Mr Muscle told me to!
Thanks for reading!

pipe.
The back of bottle has the instructions and goes something like this. The two liquids when coming together form a powerful cleaning foam. Safe to use on all pipes and sceptic tanks. Do not use through standing water. Use MrMuscleSink and PlugholeUnblocker. The foamer is for slow running sinks only.
Slowly pour the entire contents down plughole. Allow one hour for it to work then flush with hot water. What could be more simple?
I really noticed that when I poured it out it foamed as soon as it touched the plughole. I was suprised that something was working as intended. So I had a cup of tea and waited for the hour when I would at last get rid of the smell. My sink was not blocked or slow running you understand, it just ponged.
An hour or so passed and I flushed the sink with hot water as instructed. and immediately ...
Advantages: effective treatment to clear plugholes and pipes, no harsh smell Disadvantages: would be better if sold in a 400ml bottle
The only disadvantage about having long hair, coming from a person who for most of my life has kept my hair short, is that the hair gets everywhere and as a result of this my bathroom plugs and pipes have suffered.
I came across Buster Bathroom Drain Clear in the laundry/detergent aisle in Tesco and had not heard of this company before. What caught my attention was the fact that Buster Bathroom Drain Clear cost £2.99 for 300ml which is £1.00 cheaper than all the other sink and drain unblockers such as MrMuscle, Domestos etc.
Bathroom Crain Clear is a plughole treatment which blasts the blockages, smells and germs caused by hair and soap-sludge build-up down your plugholes and used regularly prevents slow running pipes and keeps everything fresh and free-flowing. I have to agree that the claims are true. This is a great product ...
Advantages: None for me. Disadvantages: Didn't work, very unpleasant.
I pull the plug out of my kitchen sink, expecting the water to whoosh away down the plughole, but no, it just glubs way slowly . So I go for my trusty steam cleaner , but I have leant it to a friend for the week, plan B is to buy some MrMuscle Foamer.
Plan B turns out to be a waste of time and money.
The claims on the product looks very promising, unblockssinks and plugholes, keeps pipes clearer longer.
So once we have finished using the kitchen for the evening I begin the treatment.
First run hot water down the plughole for I minute, and fill a container with 500ml of hot water.
Next empty one of the packs of powder into plughole.
Then slowly pour the aforementioned hot water into plughole, making sure all the powder is rinsed completely down the plughole.
Wait overnight, flush with hot water, for serious problems you ...
