Before I begin my review of this product I thought I would just let you know the challenge I face when cleaning wood in our cottage. The man who owned the place before us was a carpenter and we have a lot of handmade wooden items here including all the skirting boards, 10 solid wood doors, 2 sets of built in wardrobes with matching cupboards, a hand built kitchen complete with wooden settle, hand built wooden storage for coats shoes and umbrellas in the porch, bathroom cupboards and bath panel, shelves in the lounge, dining room and over every radiator, wooden panels over each window to fix the curtain rails to and a lovely hand built wooden staircase. So as you can see cleaning wood in this house is going to be a big job. Oh and for good measure you also need to factor in the log burner and the fact that the staircase leads straight off the lounge so everything gets dirty.

The Packaging
The wipes come in a fairly flat plastic packet with a hole in the front sealed with a peel off piece of clear plastic. It contains either 72 regular or 36 large wipes depending on whether you split each of the 36 wipes into two down the centre perforations.
The packet is mainly red with a honeycomb pattern across the middle and the names and colours of the various woods that it ‘cleans, conditions and protects’.
It also has the words ‘with beeswax – long lasting protection’.
The writing on the reverse gives instructions for use as well as warnings to test the wipes on an inconspicuous area before full use just in case of incompatibility. The rest is obvious stuff such as – don’t use on the bath as it would make it too slippery – who would use wood wipes on a bath anyway? Even worse you are reminded not to use them for personal use – I will leave that one to your imagination!
The Wipes
The wipes are a golden yellow colour, similar to a conventional duster except for the fact that they are moist. Each one measures about 8 inches by 10 inches or 8 by 5 if you separate it into two down the perforations in the centre of the wipe. I use the double wipes as I think the smaller ones would be too fiddly to use properly.
The Use
You just peel back the clear plastic seal and remove one of the wipes being careful to reseal the packet so the others don’t dry out.
The first thing that I noticed when opening the packet was the smell of the wipes. I assume the smell is the beeswax but to me it smelled citrusy and very pleasant.
The wipe was soft and felt like a soft duster to the touch. It was moist but not wet. All I had to do was wipe it over the wooden surfaces to remove the dust and finger marks.
My Experience
I started by cleaning the bathroom where we have a wooden skirting board, a wood panel on the side of the bath, wooden doors on the unit beneath the sink and again on the bathroom cupboard. The two cupboards and the side of the bath are all made from vertical pieces of shaped wood and as such the talcum powder gets into the cracks and tends to stay there!
If I use an ordinary duster I find that little bits come off it and get stuck to the edges of the wood but with the Mr Sheen wipes I found that the dust and talc lifted off a treat without leaving any bits behind.
I used three full sized wipes to do all of the wood in the bathroom and i was very pleased with the result. As the wood is not highly varnished it did not leave a deep shine but it did leave the wood looking clean with a sort of rich glow.
Once I had finished using each wipe I threw it in the bin – the instructions on the packet advise you not to flush them down the toilet!
My Final Thoughts
I found the wipes easy to use and the results were excellent. I would be happy to use them again, especially as they only cost £1 for the packet.
I would not use them every time I clean as I am aware that they aren’t very good for the environment so I would limit their use in my house.
I will use them when I am having a ‘good’ clean before guests are coming rather than every week for a normal clean if you see what i mean.
