Written and illustrated by the award-winning Babette Cole it is, according to the Bookseller: "Funny, factual and frank...a superb book...the ideal ice-breaker for parents." Mum and Dad decide that it is high time to tell their children about the facts of life, and put forward theories about gingerbread, growing seeds in the greenhouse, being squidged out of tubes and laying eggs. ...title of the book says Mummy laid an egg.
Well of course the kids being smart and one step ahead of their parents (nothing new there) decide that they'd better take charge and educate the parents. So they set about drawing diagrams to show mum and dad what really goes on. This is done in a very childlike way with simple drawings.
The children explain how mum and dads bodies are different and are therefore able to fit ... ...had me laughing so much. The children draw several pictures to show different positions. One shows mum and dad at it on a skateboard, another shows mum balancing on her head whilst dad is balancing on her and a colourful ball, another shows them floating up in the air tied to balloons and my favourite shows them going at it on a space hopper.

I ordered this book from my local library after reading an amusing review about it on another site. My daughter Roxanne is eight years old and we've always been straight with her about the facts of life.
When I was pregnant with my son a couple of years ago we bought her a book that explained where babies come from. This was a very simple book that was suitable at the time but it didn't give much detail so I was on the look out for something a bit better.
I searched the web for books that would give all the information I wanted in the simplest terms and came across 'Mummy Laid An Egg' by Babette Cole. After reading the information about it and hearing what others thought I knew that this was the perfect book to use to extend her knowledge a little more.
I wanted to have a look at the book to check that it was suitable for her so I ordered it on my library ticket. This way I thought, if she wasn't quite ready then I could just take it back and she'd be none the wiser.
Well, the look of pity the librarian gave me almost put me off!! I heard myself explaining to her rather sheepishly that yes my daughter was now at that age. She nodded knowingly and I quickly left with the book hidden in my coat.
When I got home I sat down and started to read, well I laughed and laughed. Here was I filled with dread at what I was about to show my innocent first born child but I needn't have worried.
The book starts with Mum and Dad deciding it's time that they told the children how babies are made. They tell them that girls are made from sugar and spice and all things nice and boys are made from slugs and snails and puppy dogs tails.
Then they come up with all sorts of silly stories to explain where babies come from. Dinosaurs deliver them, mum makes them out of gingerbread, they can be found under stones. The stories become more and more fantastic with each turn of the page. They grow in the greenhouse from seeds and as the title of the book says Mummy laid an egg.
Well of course the kids being smart and one step ahead of their parents (nothing new there) decide that they'd better take charge and educate the parents. So they set about drawing diagrams to show mum and dad what really goes on. This is done in a very childlike way with simple drawings.
The children explain how mum and dads bodies are different and are therefore able to fit together. Well this is the part of the book that had me laughing so much. The children draw several pictures to show different positions. One shows mum and dad at it on a skateboard, another shows mum balancing on her head whilst dad is balancing on her and a colourful ball, another shows them floating up in the air tied to balloons and my favourite shows them going at it on a space hopper.
The next stage goes on to show how the seeds then race into mums tummy in a mad dash to fertilise the egg. This done a baby then grows in mums tummy getting bigger and bigger. Finally out it pops with a big smile.
The children are quite pleased with themselves at the end of the book and in a nice finish they open the door and lots of animals run in with their babies much to mums and dads surprise.
The book is very carefully written and by doing it from the childrens point of view the author makes it very easy for young children to follow. The illustrations are perfectly and simply drawn so as not to be offensive in any way and I think that this has got to be the best book that I have come across to teach children the early basics of sex education.
So now to the important part, what did my daughter think of the book? Well, after my husband hid behind his newspaper we began. I let her read it to me so that she would see the story as a whole and not just the pictures. Yes she giggled a bit and she pointed out the 'naughty bits' on some of the pictures and as for the positions page that I was most dreading? Her reaction was... look mam they've got a space hopper!!! She read the book a second time on her own and I asked her if she had any questions about it which she did, so we tackled them and that was that. Simple.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who's thinking of tackling this subject with a young child. I know it has had a bit of bad press but from Roxannes reaction I'd say take a look and make up your own minds.
Advantages: Factual and amusing Disadvantages: none obvious
...the drawings of the ways mummy and daddy "fit together|"...on a spacehopper, a skjateboard, involved in circus tricks.
They then describe the Great Egg Race and how the winner (GOTCHA!) starts a very small baby which grows and grows until out pops the baby "Hello mummy"
The end of the book shows the children looking delighted with themselves and telling their parents "So now you know and so does everybody else"...this as they let in lots of animals.
... ...the hard back version which has stood the test ot time and lots of readings at home and school. It cost £7.99 in 1996 but I have looked on various sites and it can be bought 2nd hand from £1 (plus p and p)
I would use this for children from about 7. It doesn't have to be read to them, just left lying around or added to their book collection; children being children, they will start to look at the pictures even before they can read all of the words, ...

Advantages: Hilariously funny for adults, and children, and great pictures Disadvantages: would wait till child is about eight, younger probably won't understand the pictures or text
was in predicament of having to explain where babies came from, needed something light hearted, and finally found this book. It is fantastic, the pictures are colourful, they also lead to new questions being asked which the text hasn't explained. It is a very useful book as the light heartedness of it doesn't embarrass the child. And we both laughed at the end. The mum and dad cannot come to terms with telling their child the facts of life, so resort ... ...up all different versions along the way until the child sits them down and tells them the truth. I loved this book, and am going to get it for my daughter, as we borrwoed it from the library, and now is the time to go over it again as she is older. Price is £5.99 from Waterstones, and from Amazon sell used from £2.00. It's a great book and worth the money, as can be used again and again. ...

This princess just doesn't want to get married, she wants to stay a Ms. Her mother, the Queen tells her that it's high time she smartened herself up and looked for a husband.
So to keep dear Mummy sweet she challenges suitors to different tasks and promises that whoever accomplishes the tasks given will win her hand in marriage.
This is when her craftiness and cleverness comes to the forefront. I have listed the names of some of the suitors and the tasks she sets, knowing full well that they couldn't succeed as she chose the achilles heel of each one:

Advantages: Witty use of language and great illustrations Disadvantages: Some of the language may have to be explained!
I read this to my Year 2 class (age 6-7) and they thoroghly enjoyed it although I have to admit that some of the clever use of language had to be explained to them.

Most of us are familiar with the fairy tale all about Cinderella. BabetteCole has challenged this traditional tale and given it a completely different slant..........she's even changed the sex of Cinders, hence the title Prince Cinders.
