Advantages: Fascinating story of a Victorian crime Disadvantages: Maybe a little too much general background detail for all but the most enthusiastic reader
in Victorian Britain over the next three or four years. Among those most fascinated by the story were Charles Dickens and Wilkie Collins, the latter being inspired to write The Moonstone, regarded as the first great detective novel, partly as a result. Although this book is non-fiction, the author has managed to present it almost like a whodunit. Her description of the house and family is very vivid and detailed.
