... I emailed Mustek about it and their advice was to 'Turn it off at the mains'. Laughable.
Would I recommend it?? Probably not, as they now do an updated version which uses the usb cable for it power. The image quality is average at best, but then it was only £60.

I purchased this USB scanner for around £60. It is a very slimline scanner in a stylish deep blue colour. Its top resolution is 1200 x 600 dpi which is more than enough for any task you have in mind. Realistically, 300X300dpi is what I use for most scans. Any higher and you end up with a file measured in gigabytes!
The 1200cu performs well. Is very quite and uses the new type of scanning head; a sort of long scanning head the fule width of the scanner as aopposed to a scanning head that move left/right as well as up down. A good range of software is included (OCR and photo software as well as twain drivers).
One major grip i have with this scanner is the way it is powered. Instead of drawing power from the USB cable, it requirs a separate power pack.. messy. There is no on/off switch and when I power the PC down, the scanner stays on. This to me suggests some fault with the scanners power management perhaps. I emailed Mustek about it and their advice was to 'Turn it off at the mains'. Laughable.

Price-performance nearly unbeatable. Installation ist very simple because of USB-Plug and installation-cd. The added scan-software is above average, the added Photo Express 2.0 not my taste but it also works with Paint Shop Pro. Specifications: Scan Area: 21,6 x 29,7 cm Scanmodes: till (1200 CU) 19200 dpi x 19200 dpi (software controlled), 48 Bit Scanspeed and resolution are in common not top but above average and in the class of 75 - 100 Euro scanners ... ...and more expensive scanners (Agfa, HP) don´t perform much more but partially cost the double price. From some PC-magazines declared as price-performance winner. Only disadvantage: The oversized power plug. You need the space of two sockets (You know the space problem in Multisockets ?). But nevertheless very recommendable and in 5 min. ready for use. ...

Advantages: No extra power cable, light weight Disadvantages: Slow, problems with Windows service pack 2
For some reason I have never had much luck with scanners, I have had about 4 in my life time and each of the first 3 have died some nasty death, the worst being that the last one decided to start smoking before the glass cover shattered. Anyway, I luckily stumbled across my latest scanner a couple of years ago, being the Mustek Be@rPaw 1200CU Plus scanner, and other than a couple of issues with it working on XP service pack 2; it has been a real star.

This is what I would definitely call a slimline flatbed scanner and at just 3.7 cm in height I would hope you would agree. The rest of the scanner is pretty much a standard size with a width of approx 28cm and a depth of just over 40cm. It is no surprise that a machine as compact in size as it is does not weigh much and at 1.8 kg it is one ...
Advantages: Very easy to install, and easy to use. Cheap Disadvantages: Not the best specified scanner on the market.
A slimline scanner which looks good and will not break the bank.
This is a very good scanner for someone who does not need professional quality results. Its 1200 x 600 resolution and 48 bit colour depth is more than adequate for copying photographs - though I find that colours are not always perfect.
It is very user friendly to set up and scan images. Mine came with Photoshop 5.0LE included in the price, which is a bargain. It was also bundled with a silly game where you can bash scanned images with a mallet. This loses its novelty value very quickly.
This is identical to the Packard Bell Diamond 1200 scanner - either is a good buy. Don't expect it to scan slides though. ...
