I recently wrote an review on my 6 year old almost antique printer, well here is the review of the Mustek 1200 UB Scanner that came as part of that same package, as I am not too much of a technical person, I will try and explain in plain English without the technical jargon that I feel sometimes goes over us non technical folks heads.
I don’t use it perhaps as frequently as some would require, maybe in the whole 6 years I’ve had the scanner probably scanned around 200 times or so, but I believe it’s a good quality budget scanner as you can now pick one up for around £25, maybe even cheaper at a car boot sale or ebay, well worth checking out.
The scanner itself does not look of superior quality, it does look rather basic in a light grey plastic, the lid is rather lightweight with a black spongy inner for protection but the unfortunate thing is the lid cannot be removed, which is a bit of a pain if you need to scan something bulky, perhaps packaging of some sort, it is rather small compared to some (41cm x 27cm x 5cm) and weighs around 2.9kgs but the glass surface is sufficient to scan a little over A4 (21.6cms x 29.7cms) which is good enough for me.
Installation is very simple indeed, even by my standards, it comes complete with a CD for installation, simply follow commands when prompted and your computer will do the rest for you, when installation is complete simply connect via the USB lead.
The scan quality is rather good producing nice clear bright images, even when you have to enlarge something which is maybe down to the fact it has the ability to copy upto 600 dpi (dots per inch) x 1200 dpi but along with software you have the ability to enhance that to 19200 dpi x 19200 dpi, the scanner data buffer holds a maximum of 16KB of stored information. Scanning is a little noisy and does tend to take a few minutes, it’s not instant like some but then what do you expect with a budget scanner?
With the scanner I found there was a rather generous amount of software, well for a budget scanner, it is basic but has everything you will need to get you started, software includes:
Unlead Photo Express 2.0 SE - Main scanning and image-editing program – sufficient for the casual user, it even offers the ability to customise the image, resolution, image scale – allowing you to alter the whole scanning process, it also gives you the ability to preview before scanning and there is also the ability to add different styled borders.
Text Bridge Classic 2.0 - A very useful program using OCR technology to recognize text on scanned documents, faxes and even images you may have previously stored on your computer.
I have always found it rather easy to use, as soon as you lift the lid to begin scanning something, the computer automatically detects and offers you prompting taking you through the whole process.
Once the image has been scanned, you are immediately taken into the Unlead Photo Express program for editing or to save image onto your computer.
I would definitely recommend this as a low budget scanner, acceptable quality with the drawbacks being a bit on the slow side and of course that you cannot remove the lid, but if like me all you need it for is the occasional image scan, then this is for you.
Thanks for reading, take care, Heather :o)
