"My Legendary Girlfriend" stars Will Kelly, a newly qualified english teacher who has just moved to London at the grand old age of 25 to finally start his "career". All well and good, but Will is struggling with his past, he's trying to get over "the one", Aggi, the girl who broke his heart three years ago, and the one he cant get over. Over the course of one weekend, on the anniversary of the break up, we follow Will through his reminising of his relationship, interjected with his more current problems, namely a: the dire state of the flat he lives in, b: his current girlfriend whom he is trying to break up with, c: The breakdown of his best friends relationship (Alice) and d: finding out that his best mate Simon slept with his ex. Add this together with the girl on the phone, Kate, who used to live in his flat, and you get a rather confusing, yet comical mix of Will's struggle to do what we all are trying for, being happy.
This book deals with alot of issues facing most 20 somethings today, lack of money, lack of direction and the general breakdown of relationships past their sell by date as well as the unlikely beginnings of new ones. But its all done in a humerous way, and, as always, love triumphs in the end, leaving you with a warm feeling in your heart that there's always hope.
I loved this book immensly, and went on to read the sequels, Mr Commtment and Turning Thirty (these are not about Will, but do have similar characters in them). Ultimately, this book isnt gritty, nor hugely realistic, but I empathised alot with Will's dilema's, and kinda fell in love with the guy, even though he's obviously no adonis, or even that charming, but he was quite sweet in a "take him home to meet your Mom" kinda way.
There are some interesting twists in this, and a feeling of "its a small world after all" at points. Things didnt develiop how I'd expected them to, but that was the best bit about it. I wouldnt recommend this book to all, alot of blokes would probably think that Will is a bit of girl at times, and therefore not enjoy it as much, but I think women everywhere will love it, and enjoy seeing that men have all the same worries and insecurities we do (a nice change!).
Overall, if you like to see love conquer all, and have a few laughs along the way, give this a go, I doubt you'll be dissapointed.
"My Legendary Girlfriend" is widely available from most bookshops and shouldn't set you back more than about £5.
Advantages: Everybody will relate to something in this book. Disadvantages: I wish it was longer, I wanted to know what happened after the ending!
My Legendary Girlfriend. The title doesn't really leap out and bite you, but the blurb on the back sounded intriguing so I decided to give it a go.
Once I had picked up this book, I couldn't put it down again. I mean it, I stayed up all night!
With most books, I tend to decide that I will stop reading at the end of a chapter, but Mike Gayle has a talent of making it so that you HAVE to read the start of the next chapter, to see what twist the story ... ...this book. It covers love, leaving home, heartbreak, work, school, depression, loneliness, drinking, smoking, best friends, financial worries - the lot.
The story takes place over one weekend of the life of a young man who was dumped by his Legendary Girlfriend three years earlier - and has never got over it. He has finally left home to teach in the big City of London, where he makes a new friend over the phone... the girl who used to live in his ...

"My Legendary Girlfriend: A hilarious novel for anyone who has ever dumped, been dumped, or lived in a dump."
Thus goes the tagline used to promote this book, and as almost everyone can relate to at least one of those, you'd expect it to be something packed to the brim with humorous jokes about failing in love etc etc. Unfortunately it doesn;t quite work out like that.
A friend of mine used to work on a well known men's magazine, where Gayle's ... ...and built around one of two humourous jokes, and not much else. Now, far be it from me to lambast another writer for taking the p*ss out of anything and everything, because it's something I do myself.
Unfortunately, Gayle's bad habits don't appear to have changed too much over the years. You see, the problem with "My Imaginary Girlfriend" is not that it lacks humour, because it doesn't. It's not exactly on the same level, as, say, Bill Bryson, but ...

Advantages: To those who are over The One. Disadvantages: To those who doesn't want to be over The One.
This was last book of Mike Gayle I read. Though it is the fist book, I couldn't find it until recently. This book is about a man who'se still in love with his ex girl friend, who no longer even likes him. He goes through a telephone love and a quest to get his girl friend back. The amazing thing about this book is unlike other comedy love stories, the end is a tiny bit unexpected. Though in your heart you wish for it to happen, you don't really expect ...

If you have enjoyed reading either of MikeGayle's previous novels - the fantastic MyLegendaryGirlfriend, and the thoroughly enjoyable Mr Commitment - then you'll definitely enjoy Turning Thirty. Most of the tale takes place during the three months before Matt Beckford's 30th birthday. The book has quite a few laugh-out-loud moments, especially when Matt has to deal with his parents 'concern', and his ex-girlfriends regular emails. Those of you who have had the experience of living with your parents when in your late twenties and early thirties will find this novel even funnier. All in all, a really enjoyable read - a book that I had to finish all in one day. If you want to enjoy some good clean fun, then this is one for you. ...

The cover is very bright and catches your eye, it is blue and yellow and has a picture of two egg cups.

To be honest I don't think this book is going to set the world on fire but if you just fancy an easy read this could be the book for you......happy reading. ...

The characters are believable and this helps you to feel for them as they go through lifes obstacles.
An excellent book that I can highly recommend, I believe that this book is even better that MikeGayles previous books Mr Commitment and MyLegendaryGirlfriend, and they in themselves were hard acts to follow. ...
