Having had the builders in at home creating a new bedroom with ensuite bathroom it was natural that I would feel the need for a new bed to go in there. One of the things I was looking for when I made my selection was a bed that incorporated a memory foam layer. I had already tried a memory foam mattress topper and was very impressed with the added comfort it offered so, to me, it made sense to look for a mattress with memory foam included.
Memory foam / Visco-elastic foam ============================= I did some research into memory foam and what I learned is that memory foam is somewhat unique in the way it conforms to your body and reduces pressure points. However you wouldn't want a whole mattress made just of memory foam because it is just too soft a material and isn't meant to be supportive. So if you look at the various brands selling 'memory foam mattresses' you will find that they actually layer it over a firm, supportive material.
Memory foam is unique because of the way the memory foam cells deform when under a load. Unlike standard foams that compress, but want to spring back to their original shape immediately, memory foam cells compress fully and spread their air pressure to adjoining cells. This is caused by the open cell foam, which means the cells of foam have holes in them. Memory foam is also temperature sensitive. At lower temperatures it is harder, and at higher temperatures it is softer and bouncier.
Memory foam / Visco-elastic foam beds ================================== There is obviously a wide choice available in the market place and I wanted a bed that was well made and which would last. I already had a Myers bed which had given good service so I looked at what was available in their range. I saw the Myers Visco Sublime Bed on the Co-op web site and it seemed like reasonably good value for a memory foam mattress from a reputable manufacturer at £449 for the double bed.
The Myers Visco Sublime Bed has a 70 mm layer of Visco-elastic memory foam which conforms to the heat of your body to mould the mattress to give total support. This is set on top of one of Myer's Bonnell spring units which gives the ultimate comfort and support combination.
I selected the drawer divan option which came with four large storage drawers built into the base of the bed which provide ample storage for spare bedding (and other bits of sundry junk that I seem very adept at collecting!)
Ordering and delivery ==================== I placed my order and was contacted by the Co-op to advise me there would be a three to four week wait for delivery - as with so many things these days goods actually come direct from the manufacturers once the customer has placed their order. I was pleased to note that they kept to their predicted delivery date and time slot and in due course my new bed was delivered.
The bed was well packed to protect the attractive cream coloured fabric. It was wrapped in a strong clear polythene with cardboard corner protectors thus doing the job effectively without giving me loads of packaging to dispose of. The drawers were firmly secured in place with strips of surplus fabric making it easy to free them ready for use. The two halves of the divan base were easy to fix together using the bolts provided and the castors just slotted into their prepared bases.
Because the mattress has a layer of memory foam on one side there is no need to turn this mattress. It stays the same way up throughout its life. Personally I don't suffer from allergies but a friend who is very allergic tells me that the bonus with memory foam is that it doesn't harbour dust mites and thus helps to keep some of her allergies at bay.
Was it worth it? =============== I always find that when getting a new bed (especially if your old one had seen better days!) you really do notice a difference and it takes a little time to get used to. The new bed was much firmer than my old one but it also had a softness that you gradually sink into and which supports you as you sleep. They do cost more than a traditional mattress but I do think the visco-elastic foam is supportive and does offer the benefits claimed.
Would I recommend it?
=============== Yes I would, if you are planning to buy a new mattress and want a bit of extra comfort and support to help you to get a restful sleep. However if you have a relatively new mattress that already gives you good support then you might as well just buy a mattress topper made of memory foam and put it on your existing mattress.
Advantages: Extremely comfortable bed, very easy to assemble, excellent service from Sleep Depot Disadvantages: Could be a little high for someone small & elderly
We really needed a new bed & I did a little research courtesy of Ciao & the sleep council & then searched the web for best beds & prices. Dreams & The Sleep Depot were both near our home in Farnborough, Hampshire & had beds at good prices that we were interested in. On 26.07.07 we went to Dreams first & tried a few beds but were not completely happy with any, my husband prefers a softish bed & I like a firm bed. We enquired about delivery dates & ... ...asked if that was definate & he said well maybe 8th, maybe 9th or 10th - we left. At the Sleep Depot we tried the beds I already knew about but they were either too soft for me or too hard for my husband. The sales manager asked us to try the Visco bed with memory foam & after trips back & forth to the others we both agreed it was the most comfortable for both of us. The manager matched the price of this bed to one of the ones I had first liked so ...
