Six years ago, to address my heavy and prolonged periods, I had the Myrena coil fitted. It was explained to me by my very informative well women doctor as a inter-uterine contraceptive device with a hormone impregnated section that would deliver a far lower dose of progesterone than the pill directly into the womb lining.

I had had a number of years of fertility treatment to no avail and as a result had taken the decision to have my tubes clipped to ensure that I would not accidentally fall pregnant if I became fertile. My periods had got heavier and longer and I was getting desperate for a solution. I was losing time off work and feeling grotty. Oral hormones had not helped and the Myrena coil looked like the right solution for me.

I was warned that it would be very uncomfortable to fit as I hadn't ever had children, so my cervix would by very tight. My GP (a woman) was very gentle and explained every step to me. I was given a local anaesthetic injection into the cervix that turned out to be far more painful than the procedure itself! The coil is inside an applicator tube, about the size of a drinking straw. This is inserted through the cervix into the womb and then the tube is withdrawn leaving the coil in place. Two plastic coated copper wires are left protruding out of the cervix into the womb and these are trimmed short. They are left long enough to feel and you are advised to check once a month after your period (if you still have them). It is important that if your partner can feel them during sex you go back to your GP and have them re-trimed. Be prepared to go back as many times as it takes for you both to be comfortable!

The initial sharp pain of the insertion soon wore off into a dull ache, like period pains. After a couple of days this too wore off. There then followed five years of period free life. I was the healthiest I had been for several years.

Then it came to the time to remove and replace it. I had put it off for about 5 months longer than I should have and had started getting spotting once a month. Also I had moved and only recently registered with a new GP. I went in for a pre-fitting checkup and made the appointment.

I had explained about the fact that I hadn't had children and my cervix might me very sensitive. My new GP (also a woman) was very sympathetic and very gentle. Again she explained every step which was very reassuring. I used yoga breathing exercises during the extraction and replacement and felt far less discomfort than the original fitting.

So, new coil fitted I felt happy and was looking forward to another 5 period free years.

So what went wrong? That month my spotting was worse. I figured perhaps the coil needed some time to start working. So I waited for the next month, but now the spotting had turned into a period. I waited another 3 months before going back to my GP who prescribed additional progesterone in the form of Provera, but to no avail.

Eventually I made the decision to have the coil removed and not replaced. The procedure was relatively painless and in response to my questions about the potential failure of the coil my GP has sent it back to the manufacturer for investigation. I have worked in the medical device industry and was aware of the regulatory requirement for manufacturers to investigate potential failures of medical devices and spoke with my GP about it. She was very helpful and agreed to send it back. I'm seeing her again shortly and hope to find out a bit more.

In the meantime, a recent blood test has indicated a fairly substantial hormone imbalance and I am taking a break from any form of artificial hormones until we can get to the bottom of the problem.

My advice? The Myrena worked wonders for me first time around. As for why the replacement failed? I cannot answer that. It could be that it was faulty or my hormone imbalance may be to blame. At the end of the day I suggest that you get all the information you can, read all the opinions, talk to women with them fitted and make as informed judgement as you can.

Did you ever resolve if it was a manufacturing fault?

Have just had mine replaced today and the one out and one in procedure lasted no more than 10 mins. Sure it was a little 'crampy' but I'm OK. I've been period free for 5 years. A few minutes discomfort (I can't say that it hurt at all) is worth the monthly financial saving on not having to buy tampax etc and the fact that I don't bleed or have any of the hormonal problems I used to associate with 'that time of the month' is great news for me and my family. If you type Mirena into a search engine you will come across a site that has a larger than life picture of this little baby. At it's thickest it is only 5mm thick, about the same as the side of a pound coin! I recommend it to friends and clients alike and wish that there had been info like this when I went for my first one in 1999. I hope that I don't have the problems with my second one that you have had!
