NAVMAN Italian Maps for the iCN 320 Maps

A package of maps worth having

Having used a Tom Tom Go 700 for a number of years, I decided to update the maps of Western Europe. Tom Tom uses software called Tom Tom Home which is used to download the updated maps. Having connected Tom Tom Go 700 to my PC, via a USB cable, it was a simple matter of clicling on the relevant icon on the Home Software, paying for the maps, and downloading them over the internet. Payment was straight forward. It is undertaken electronically either by credit or debit card, and the down load commenced. Because of the size of the map file, it took a little time to download (I do have broadband running at 8mb band width, so I suppose a lesser bandwith will take longer. Google Maps

Advantages: Easy, free, fast, reliable
Disadvantages: None

Google Maps is easily my favourite and the best free online source for directions. The directions you receive from Google Maps are always accurate and correct and get you to your destination easily and fast. I will always use Google Maps until the day I get lost using the directions it gives me which I doubt will ever happen. All you have to do is enter your postcode and enter the postcode of your destination and it immediately gives you a fast, easy route to get there, just like a SatNav would. Also the fact that you can change your route if you need to like, lets say you need to pick someone up in a different town on the way, you can change your route to make it go past the place you need to pick them up. Overall, I think that Google Maps is easily the best source of directions on the internet. ...

Good, Bad and Indifferent

Advantages: Good entry-level Sat Nav system. Good price.
Disadvantages: Has its limitations.

and download the Italian map for the Navman, which I could then burn onto a relatively inexpensive memory card. Wrong! You don't seem to be able to do this with the Navman. Instead, I'll have to purchase the memory card for Italy separately, and the best price I've been able to find (so far) is a mind-boggling ?152. This is more than I paid for the unit itself! Even if you do manage to find a download and burn it onto a memory card, then it would appear from info I've garnished from some chat sites that the Navman has some sort of security facility that will reject any card not supplied by the manufacturer. It may be possible to overcome this, and I'm currently talking to my wife's nephew (who has a degree in Computer Science) to see if this is possible. But at the moment it would seem I have no alternative to buy a complete new memory card. So far ...
