Well before Christmas of last year I had just had my Orange phone cut off due to an unfortunate mix-up so in the meantime I had to find a solution to my mobile phone needs which didn't cost £250 .
Now I'd had some previous experience of 3 and hadn't been too happy, hence switching to Orange. So off I toddled round Wolverhampton looking for a value for money package and found it in the 3 concession in Superdrug, Wolverhampton. The first thing I noticed was a queue about ten long(!) and the Concession Manager coming towards the counter with a big pile of boxes. And yes that queue was all for the NEC e616v. for the buy of the year..

One Handset,
One standard battery (1100mah) and one Extended Battery (1800mah)
One SIM package
Charger,headphones, USB lead for for connecting to a PC and PC software.
Full instuctions.
After inserting the SIM and placing the phone on charge (2-3 hrs for the Extended Battery and 1-2 hrs for the Standard Battery), the moment of truth.
I turned on the handset, to be greeted by a bright snappy colour display which was a little confusing at first, this was cured by several reads of the instruction manual. And the first call went through to a friend's mobile who was on 3. Despite me living in a borderline area for coverage the call went through straight away, no drop, no cut-off and was loud and clear. It's an often misused statement but it was truly "Clear as a landline"!
After topping up with a £5 text voucher, I found the text messaging a little awkward, having been used to an excellent system on the Nokia 6310i I'd previously owned. Again,that has improved with practice.
Other facilities include a position locator termed AGPS (advanced gobal postioning satellite)-again a little fussy but when it works it's very good, a small built in torch which is a useful touch, video calling between 3 phones which I don't use, a camera which is very good for the type of phone it is 640x480 pixel resolution, memory stick for storing photos etc and downloading directly onto a PC, Bluetooth for using an optional cordless headset and all the call facillities such as call waiting/barring/divert etc you could ever wish for.
In use this handset has proved a formidably efficient tool giving excellent recepion and call quality from the 3 network, very good battery life for a 3G phone (24hrs standby for the std battery and 36hrs for the extended battery) and has also come with 3's staggering value for money PAYG package. Tell me who is doing 500 minutes of cross network calls and 75 text messages for £30?
And the drawbacks?
Well I had a dreadful time over Christmas and the New Year with dropped calls but this was down to 3's pathetic network,but admittedly it's getting better round Wolverhampton. The menus are also idiosyncratic(those of you used to Nokia handsets are going to land with a bump!!) and the battery low warning is far too sudden-about 30 sec of talk time before the handset cuts out. Also the use via PC is is not the most straightforward-I've struggled with downloading pics onto my pic file. Again,not a fault of the handset but I wish 3 gave longer than 30 days before their vouchers expired.
Stll you can't have everything!
Overall, this phone would have been good at it's original £200 price mark-at £44.95 3 may has well have wrapped it up in ten pound notes.
If you've got good 3 coverage where you use a mobile and want an outstanding value-for-money package then look no furthur!
Advantages: Really cheap multi function phone Disadvantages: the 3 network, no MP3 ringtone
...I found the NEC as an offer for £30 a month, one year contract with the first 10 months free...yes 10 months of a one year contract free. I worked out with this deal I would get all my calls and texts for a year for £60 PLUS the flip phone of my dreams. I read every review I could find on this phone and found none detailing anything other than sulking ex-Nokia users or folk moaning about the battery life.
Well....I've never used a Nokia anyway and ... ...my old Panasonic as the NEC allows you to use full stops, commas and question marks....in fact a lot of symbols without having to do handstands...!!!
I can set each of my number entries to show me a photo of who I'm calling which is really handy for me as I cannot read the text without my reading glasses so the picture that gets displayed is an absolute boon to me. I have no desire to use the internet so that feature means little to me as do a lot ...

...made my boyfriend want the NEC E616 instead. ~The Handset.~
It’s a flip up front (also know as a clam shell) which makes it look nice. Its silver in colour, with there logo ‘3’ network on the right hand side. You have a small front display screen, which displays,

3G network - which indicates if you are in the ‘3’ video service area, ‘3’ service connection and global positioning service.
It will display a message if the phone ... ...about 5 minutes the first time it bleeped to work out where it was coming from). It also displays if you have any text messages, and caller ID when someone rings. At the bottom on the front of the phone you have a camera light(suppose it comes in handy if you ever have a power cut, other than that I don’t see the point), camera, and LED indicator.
On the side of the phone you can adjust the volume with the up and down keys. I have also discovered ...

Advantages: Internet and Camera Disadvantages: Huge, Hard to Use
~~~Intro~~~
I bought this phone a month before Christmas from a friend for £20 and by the time Christmas came I was glad to replace it. The phone is a flip phone with many features.
~~~Looks~~~
The phone itself is not ugly looking; it has a sleek and stylish inside (where the buttons and screen are) they are arranged neatly with the navigation circle surrounded by other buttons. But by far the main complaint of the looks is the size it is the ... ...in your back pocket. The measurements of the phone are roughly:
Closed:
Width: 100mm
Height: 35mm
Depth: 50mm
Open:
Width: 190mm
~~~Weight~~~
With a big phone comes a heavy weight after weighing it I realised it weighed 152 grams which doesn't seem very much but to compare I weighed my new phone (Samsung E720) which weighed only 83 grams, Which is nearly halve the weight. The specification of the phone says it weighs 131 grams but ...
Advantages: Excellent Price -Fun package deal Disadvantages: Tad bigger than most clamshells
...the proud owner of a NEC e616v for 5 days, what do I think ? WELL -
- my first impression on opening the box (bearing in mind I own a cute little Samsung Clamshell) was its size, this phone is somewhat bigger than I'm used to even though its described as a slimline clamshell design , it's still a bit bigger than I had expected but I guess it has to be when you see what it is capable of.
- battery charged etc...(of which you get two due to higher ... ...thinking to myself 'where do I start with this phone, so much seems to be going on here'
but what a suprise I got when I found it was rather easy to navigate around and within minutes I was taking pictures and mini movies of almost everything I could - it has two cameras so you can take a mug shot of yourself or one of whoever is in front of you. GREAT !
-mmmmm, wot do I get for the £15 credit that comes with it - well, on trying to make my first ...
Advantages: Great user interface, easy to use Disadvantages: Very poor battery performance even worse customer services
...Phone
I got the NEC 616 on the 3 network after consulting with a couple of other owners of the hand set. I decided to take the plunge and pulled myself away from my existing service provider, whom I had been with for many years. I have had many mobile phones over the years and normally change them every 12 months.
The handset arrived bright and breezy they day after I ordered it. It was very nicely packaged. It cam with the following
Nec e616 ... ...their own ringtunes (that’s what Nec call ringtones), you can even set different text tones for them, it also goes in the detail of having the front light flashing different colours, probably completely useless but it was nice to see such attention to detail. Another thing which I found a pleasure to use was the text messaging system. The predictive text is T9 found on many mobile phones. 3 does not support cross network multi media messaging. As ...
Advantages: Has 2 decent quality cameras Disadvantages: Very clumsy and difficult to use, too heavy and big
This phone is an OK phone but there are quite a few little problems with it.
Looks
The looks are quite good with the buttons and the good colour. (I like silver) However, the phone itself is very big and is often rather annoying. The software that is built in does look good though and is actually rather easy to get to grips with. The phone is also really heavy which is a big disadvantage.
Functionality
The functions of this phone does have a few flaws. The phone does have blutetooth but it can only work with other NEC phones which is a big downfall of the phone. There is a camera on the outside and on the inside of the phone which I thought is rather useful and the quality of the camera is actually really good. You can only buy this phone on the 3 network which is a huge disadvantage as the network is rather ...
Advantages: Pretty Much Everything Disadvantages: Screen gets easily clogged with dust, battery life is pretty average when you watch videos/use the camera, build feels a little flimsy
Firstly let me say that this is an excellent phone and by far the best I have ever owned. Furthermore, I've been on 3 for a couple of years now and this is the first 3rd generation phone that I've seen which is actually worth owning, and is better than the equivilent 2nd generation models.
The basics of this phone are precisely what you would expect from a nokia; excellent sound quality during calls, easy to use menus and all of the other features that originally served to make them market leaders.
Upon getting this phone the first thing that I was struck by was the quality of the screen. Previously I had been using a NECe616 handset, on which the screen was good enough to watch videos, but this handset is in a different league entirely. The detail is fantastic and as an added bonus you can turn it on its side and watch on a far ...
Advantages: Cheap good quality phones (at least in my experience...) AWESOME Value-for money, range of advanced services Disadvantages: Per minute billing, top up lost after thirty days, variable coverage and network quality (though this has improved recently),0800 and 0845 numbers NOT included in your regular allowance.
I first had a brush with 3 back in January 2004 when I purchased a Motorola A835 on Videotalk 500. It was a mixed experience and to cut a long story short I terminated my account with them.
Well things change and due to absolute necessity, I purchased an NECe616v on 3 PAYG and I've been pleasantly surprised by the major improvements I've experienced. I joined a queue of about twenty in my local Superdrug store just before Christmas and purchased it for £44.95 inc 50 mins of airtime and £5 woth of extras inc video downloads ringtunes etc. Give-away or what?
Of course 3 have priced their handsets so that they offer outstanding value for money and they are confident they will make up the subsidy over the lifetime of the handset with the customers call spen, but thats fair enough in my opinion.
Ok, so what does Three offer ...
