The Phone

I got the NEC 616 on the 3 network after consulting with a couple of other owners of the hand set. I decided to take the plunge and pulled myself away from my existing service provider, whom I had been with for many years. I have had many mobile phones over the years and normally change them every 12 months.

The handset arrived bright and breezy they day after I ordered it. It was very nicely packaged. It cam with the following

Nec e616 handset
Standard slimline battery
Extended ‘fat’ battery
Mains Charger
Usb Data cable
Cd rom with PC sync software.
Instructions and provider paperwork

It was the first time I had seen the phone in the flesh and my first impressions were very good. It is considerably smaller than other 3 phones and well built. I started off by reading the instructions to find out how long the initial battery charge should be. To my surprise this was only 2 hours (first charge is normally 6 to 14 hours). I did as instructed and charged the phone for the recommended time, assuming that battery technology was moving on and a longer charge was not required. You’ll notice that phone came with two batteries, a slim line one that sits in the back of the phone and is flush with the case and a ‘fat’ extended battery that sits about 3 or 4mm proud of the case. This battery makes the phone look like it has a growth that would not be out of place in Ripleys musem.

Whilst charging I carried on reading the instructions. These were easy to follow but I thought somewhat basic. This is fine for someone who is new to mobile phones or who is technologically challenged, but no good for anyone who want to know the nitty gritty and all the little short cuts. I later found a more comprehensive manufacturers instruction book on the enclosed CD. After two hours the phone was ready to play with and the charging light had gone out.

The handset is a clam shell design and opens with a satisfying and solid Audi like clunk. The keys are nice and big just right for someone with my big digits. The screen is a good size, the resolution and the colours are quite vivid. Moving on to the user interface, one button takes you to the main menu which is done in a windows style, from there you can access, contacts, messaging, a file manger, Java applications (games and software accessories), settings and so on (9 windows all together). Each area you go into has numerous additional options. You also have a separate button denoted by three dots, this opens even further options in most of the sub menus. I can see that the amount of settings could be daunting to a new user, but you only need most of these items if you really want to play about with the phone. In particular I like the way that you could modify each individual phonebook contact to have their own ringtunes (that’s what Nec call ringtones), you can even set different text tones for them, it also goes in the detail of having the front light flashing different colours, probably completely useless but it was nice to see such attention to detail. Another thing which I found a pleasure to use was the text messaging system. The predictive text is T9 found on many mobile phones. 3 does not support cross network multi media messaging. As I have said the options on the phone are numerous, far too many to list here.

I’ll move on to the 3g specific utilities now. There are two networks 3g phones work on, 3g which is the 3rd Generation mobile phone network hence the 3g and 2g, the network that most people are on now. When there is no 3g reception the phone reverts back to 2g. 2g will only allow you to make normal calls and will not give you the high speed access required for 3g services. The first 3g service I tried was a video call to a friend who has the same phone, this was surprisingly good. The picture reasonable and the sound was ok, this is however easily drowned out by background noise. Secondly I tried the GPS (Global Positioning Satellite) system. The phone has a built in GPS receiver which is accessed by going to an online map which cost 10p a time. I could not get this to work for love nor money. It kept positioning me two miles from my actual location. Which is no use at all for using the mapping system. 3 will only allow you view and down load their own approved content as the internet access is in what they call a ‘walled garden’ which basically means you only see what they want you to see and purchase (£2 for a ringtune or picture). This is very restrictive and I understand this to mean you can’t use the phone to access the internet with a PDA or laptop. I didn’t get much further with the 3g services and I will go in to the reason why now.

Problems

The problems I had with the phone really started on the first day, I had been playing for around 45minutes when I noticed the battery meter was beginning to drop. Didn’t think much of it at first but then an hour later the phone gave a battery warning and then closed down. It was two hours from a full charge to nothing. Not a good start I thought. So I charged up the ‘fat’ battery this took about 2 and half hours. This lasted a bit longer but needed charging at the end of the day.

This carried on for the next couple of days. On the third day I left the phone out on my kitchen table with a full fresh charge (fat battery). I picked the phone up to make a call about an hour later and it was warm to the touch, in particular the battery. An hour after that the battery was flat and the phone was even warmer. This really began to worry me. The battery was recharged and the identical thing happened. This is when I phoned customer services but I’ll come back to that. I tried out the slimline battery and all this could give me was 12 hours on standby. All this means that if you leave the house for any length of time you will need both batteries fully charged and it would be wise to take a charger with you.

Customer services

I only phoned customer services the once, that was enough for me. After a lengthy set of options I eventually got through to 3’s customer services. I noticed a sudden change is in the quality of the phone line it was then answered by a woman with a very strong Indian accent. Apparently I was through to 3’s customer services in India and it wasn’t the wrong number. I endeavoured to explain my problem at which point the lady told me I had come through to the wrong department. I was put through to someone else and had to start over. She asked me some questions, with the combination of a very poor phone line and the very strong accent I had to keep asking her to repeat the question. It left me feeling like I was being very rude. I was told that it was not 3’s problem and that I should return the handset to the supplier (at my own cost). I wanted to know what the problem was not what I could do with the handset.

The same day I also e-mailed customer services via the 3 website asking why the battery life was so poor and why the GPS was not working. That was 5 days before writing this review and at the time I had not even had an acknowledgement let alone a reply. I have sent 3 further emails and the only reply at the time of writing was an off hand e-mail telling me not to e-mail that address.

Conclusion

The 616 could be a first class handset, it has the looks and the operating system to be up there with the best. But I have to give it a poor rating due to the exceptionally bad battery life and the even worse customer services. This is backed up by the restrictions placed on 3g services and the unacceptably poor GPS system. I have now sent the phone back as thankfully it had a 14 day trail period. I feel this is a real shame, if the phone appeared on another network with decent batteries I would, with out a doubt, have it again.

I really think that the 3g network is not yet ready and 3 have, by getting in early, sold themselves short and provided a poor service. The big players are doing the right thing by waiting for the handset technology and network capability to be good enough to market.

I for one will wait now until the main providers are ready to roll out their 3g networks. Things should get interesting and I can see 3 sinking without a trace.

So if your thinking of going to 3 then in the words of the lovely Anna Freil "It's your call".

Despite me having a near opposite experience with this handset-I still rated your review as VH as it was well written and presented and also had examples of the issues you faced. Regards-Peter.

Excellent review - like others, i wish I had seen this before buying. The battery life IS abysmal and my old phone and provider made my pay and go plan a damned sight easier than "three" - can I have my money back....pleeeeeeeeease!!!!
