Internal IDE DVD writer DVD -/+R 8x DVD -/+RW 4x CD-R 32x CD-RW 16x DVD-ROM 12x CD-ROM 40x
Bought an OEM version of this drive from ebuyer for £65 about 2 weeks ago.
The drive looks like just about any other internal DVD or CD drive with the usual eject button, volume wheel and head phone socket on the front and power, IDE, audio and slave/master jumpers/connectors on the back.
Beware that he OEM version comes as just a bare drive in an anti-static bag, you do not get any software, screws or leads. If you do need these buy the retail version (usually about £7 more). Installation was no problem at all, you do not need any drivers.
I've tried this drive with quite a few programs including Easy CD Creator 6, Nero 6, DVD decryptor, DVD Clone, DVD Shrink with no problems. This drive also works with the Aldi/Tevion TV tuner card Xpert TV7134 (this card comes with some DVD creation software). Not had any bad disks due to the drive (only my own errors).
Writes BulkPaq orange DVD-R's and Imation DVD-RW's with no problems at all. The drive is very quiet in operation.
I did look at the 4x version of this drive but at only £10 more for this 8x drive it would seem daft to go for the slower drive. Although 8x disks don't seem to be available at present its only a matter of time, I know my old 16x CD writer soon became a pain.
I should add that firmware is available for this drive that will increase its performance above spec (higher write speeds, multiregion), I haven't used this firmware so can't comment on it (http://tdb.rpc1.org/#ND2500A), you should be aware that this is not official NEC firmware but third party and you should know what you're doing before installing it.
Basically it does everything you want at a good price.
Advantages: Fast, Reliable, Cheap. Works a Treat. Disadvantages: May Look abit Cheap and tacky'ish
I needed a DVD-Writer for the cheapest amount of money but i also wanted quality and usually those two qualities never go hand in hand, BUT i was Very Surprised with this product, I couldnt belive how fast it burned my Monthly Back-Up and in the Long Run I will save me money because you can fit the same as 6-7 CD-R's which means you could save around £0.80 per DVD* you use instead of CD-R's.
I would definatly Recommend this itme to anyone who is ...

Ciao members have rated this review on average: somewhat helpful Review of NEC ND 2500A
The ND-2500 is an 8-in-1 combo-drive offering industry leading 8x write speeds to both -R and +R media. This drive offers users a maximum 12x DVD-ROM read speed combined with a maximum 40x CD-ROM speed with the added bonus of CD-RW speeds of 32x and Ultra-Speed CD-RW discs at 16x.The ND-2500A offers the fastest DVD recording currently available in the market, together with fast CD recording and excellent read performance. It also gives the user the ability to select their preferred media without having to decide which DVD format to use with no compromise in performance: 1 hour DVD Video can be recorded in less than 10 minutes! The ND-2500A takes advantage of NEC's "high resolution writing strategy" and of an improved version of NEC's "Active Optimized Power Control" (Active OPC). The "high resolution writing strategy", uses advanced laser modulation to enhance the accuracy of the written data. Active OPC dynamically monitors writing power and reflection of the media in use, calculating the optimum laser power and adjusting it in real-time. In addition to this, NEC has implemented its own buffer under run error prevention technology. This drive offers the performance required for the next generation of multimedia applications, allowing users to play DVD titles to the highest quality and enjoy all the advantages of Home Cinema applications. Configured with the latest technologies for digital signal processing, this drive has exceptional performance features and is particularly impressive because of its reliability.Whether you want to read or play computer, video or audio data, this drive eliminates the risk of confusion between the types of media and the appropriate drive needed to view such data.
