...After owning just about every make of laptop over the years, this is the first that I have really truly liked. A sturdy but lightweight laptop, with a very decent screen and very useable keyboard. The specifications were what I thought very good for the price I paid, and after running performance tests I was delighted to find that the laptop outran my carefully built and tuned P4/2.4Ghz desktop by factors of almost 3:1. The DVD/RW drive has survived almost 6 months of intense use, the internal wifi seems to have excellent range, and the hardware is compatible with linux without any difficulties (which was my main concern as i'm not too good at configuring linux yet :-).
One handy feature is the "fan" button near the keyboard. Pressing this puts emphasis on keeping the CPU running as fast as possible without turning the fan up to high...

Advantages: Sleek, Stylish and Affordable Disadvantages: Battery Life
...The Acer Aspire 1642ZWLMi is a credit to its makers. On first look, its sleek and stylish exterior will please any eye and on opening the great impression just keeps on growing.
The interior is stylish in a combination of black and silver with a very comfortable space surrounding the keyboard and mouse, allowing the wrists to remain easily supported. The mouse touch pad is large with two buttons and a scrolling device. Attracting the most attention is the excellent display. A 15.4" widescreen incorporating Acer 'CrystalBrite' technology. The resolution is fantastic and just radiates a feeling of quality.
The laptop is equipped with a 1.7GHz Intel Pentuium M Processor (735A) with a 2MB L2 cache. This is accompanied by 1024MB of DDR2 RAM that supports dual channel, and an 80GB Hard Disk Drive. Built in wireless networking...

Advantages: Very good looking and great value for money Disadvantages: Mouse slightly too close to edge of hardware
...- I therefore did not want Packard Bell again!
I also believed it was worth ensuring that wireless software was in place as this was probably going to become more commonplace and connection cheaper in the future, even if I was not going to use it now.
I was pleasantly surprised what you could now buy for your money in terms of specification. In short I was advised to buy the Acer 1683 and got the following specification:
Price: ₤899 plus ₤299 for a 5 year collect and deliver guarantee
Intel PentiumM processor
1.7Ghz (apparently equal to 3.2 Ghz on a Pentuim 4), 400 Mhz FSB, 2MB L2 Cache
15. 4” wide screen screen
80GB
512MD DDR
802.11 b/g wireless LAN - Centrino Mobile
64MB ATI Radeon 9700 graphics
Dual DVD RW
2 hour battery
The laptop itself looks really good and is very light for the size of screen...
