I’ve got nothing but praise for the Netgear DG834G router. I’ve been using the router for the past year and I’ve be very happy with it. Prior to getting this product I had an ADSL connection. The difference from switch has opened my eyes to what I’ve been mission out on!
I got my new gear when I switched my internet connection package. I had AOL silver and then upgraded to platinum for free. This was a special offer as I was going to cancel my contract. (What a good deal! :D). The guy said that he would upgrade my connection, plus give me a free router box which turned out to be the Netgear DG834G box.
*The box I got with my new hardware was that what you can buy off the shelf. This means that you can buy the following contents that I am reviewing from good PC shops.
What come with it? In the box I
got the router, which was wrapped up in special bubble wrap and plastic sheets. This protects the router from bands and nudges that it may get while in transit or in your trolley. I also got in the box a yellow Ethernet cable. This Ethernet cable was half a meter to one meter in length which I felt could have done with being a little bit bigger. This was not a big problem as they are dead cheap to buy. This cable that came was it in the manual says has to be connected from port one on the router to your Ethernet port on your pc/laptop. I did this. You also get two “v” shaped stands that I have never configured what they are and their purpose. I decided that I would use them as my table levels, as I have an uneven floor and they sit perfectly their doing a grand job. I also got a CD. This CD had the software and devices need to install my Netgear router. On this CD it had a fairly easy interactive install feature. This was also a pain as it took about 5 minuets watching the video on how to set it up. I also got a plastic pen shaped stick. I then worked out that this was an Ariel. :D
You said an Arial? Yes the Netgear DG834G router is wireless. This is a great feature which I use when we need to connect a second, third or even a fourth pc/laptop to the router. This “stick” screws into the back of the router and you can see on pictures it stands up in the air. A little problem I’ve had with the Ariel is that it sometimes turns and flops back down. I can’t seem to tighten it up no matter what I do with it. I have a solution and that is “duck tape” hehe. It looks a bit funny but at least my signal is 100% connected.
How many? You can get up to and including four pc/laptops on the router. This can be through connecting via wires or by the wireless connection. You can’t have anymore then four connect any and given time. This means you may have 2 wired connections and 2 wireless connections.
Speed? The Netgear DG834G router connections are measured in “Mbps”. Mbps = megabytes per second, this means if you has 100 Mbps you are getting per second 100 megabytes of information. The maximum speed I have ever reached is 100Mbps. This is quite fast and works perfectly for me. I can stream, download and surf pretty fast and it’s the fastest connection I’ve ever been on.
Stop, stop, stop – I don’t know how to install! When you unpack the box you will see a CD. Put the CD in to your pc and it should load. If it doesn’t then just go to “my Computer” and click on the CD/DVD drive. It will then load. You should now see a video which will guide you through the steps to install the product and get connected to ciao :D.
Here are the install instructions: 1> Connect the wires and cable to the connections when prompted. This will be something along the lines of “Connect one of the yellow Ethernet cables to port one on the router. Connect the other end into your Ethernet port on your pc”. This is really easy and should not take you long. 2> It will then ask you if you want to set up a wireless network. Click yes or no. If you picked yes you will be prompted to enter you WEP keys which will be on your wireless device. If you click no it will just install you devices needed on to your pc.
I think that you are best of if possible trying to connect via an Ethernet cable as much as possible. The reason is because it is faster and safer as hackers can’t see the data being sent over the air. You can protect your self from this by using a firewall which is an enabled for wireless connections.
The Netgear also has a management page. You can access this by typing " http://192.168.0.1 " . The default username is " admin " and the default password is " password " (no quotes). You can change the password by clicking on the options button on the page that loads. This is really good for techie people who might want to change the settings to suite them, or to turn on remote network etc.
Over all I am very happy with the Netgear DG834G router. I’ve had a lot of use out of it and hopefully ill get a couple of year more out of it. I love it when my family comes around with their laptop as they just connect to my router via the connection wizard from windows. Out of 10 I give this product a 9/10
