We seem to have advanced our internet options in leaps and bounds this year. Until late last year we were still on Dial up connection through our Internet provider Karoo. Karoo is provided by our local telephone service provider which is Kingston Communications. This company was a council run and owned company for as long as I can remember, until it's stock market floatation a few years ago. Herein lies a saga and a half but I will not go into details here, as most of it, is not relevant to the Net gear Router. However I wanted to point out that citizens of Hull are excluded from the many good offers which abound from Internet and Telephone Service providers as we are only able to have a Kingston phone line etc. This means Skpe is unavailable plus many other benefits and also explains how we came to select
the Netgear Router.
Earlier this year we took up one of Karoo's Broadband deals and have been relatively pleased with it. However since we purchased a laptop recently, with wireless capabilities as standard ,we looked at upgrading to a wireless broadband connection. I would just like to say here that although I may sound quite technology competent here, that as a 50 something female, my knowledge is limited. We looked at buying a router from Currys and had actually purchased a Belkin model at around £80 before someone told us that it was c--p and may not work well with Karoo. Looking through some old post I saw that there was still a valid offer with Kingston Communications to upgrade our Broadband Internet connection and purchase a Netgear Router at half price into the bargain.
Another trip to town saw us returning the Belkin and hot footing it to Kingston Communications large outlet in our City Centre. The Router was to be dispatched in a day or two and the connection upgraded in 7 days. True to their word two days later a nice little package arrived and on opening I saw that it was the Netgear DG834G Router, various leads and a couple of suppressors. Suppressors is probably the wrong word but they are the small connections which are needed to stop distortion of your phone clarity when you are using Broadband. We already had one of these connected to our main phone. Apparently one needs to be plugged into each place that you have an incoming telephone to prevent distortion and poor sound quality on your phone.
The bill for this half price Router, and all the bits and bobs, was to be £35 and paid about a month later. We managed to sort out the connection with only a few problems. Part of the trouble was the wireless connection and Laptop were new to both of us also. Still we only needed one phone call to the support desk who were really helpful as always.
We have plugged the Netgear Router into our main computer upstairs. The laptop tends to nearly always be downstairs and touch wood we have had no problems. The Router is white and can be laid flat or connected, temporarily to two plastic feet and stood on it's end. These feet are a little clumsy looking but I suppose their size is important for stability. This is how we use it as, this way, it takes up such a small amount of space. It has an Antenna on the side which can be turned if necessary.Around the outer rim there are also some lights at one side and the connection slots at the other. We found we had three leads to connect: A yellow Ethernet cable which connects the Router to the computer. A phone cable which plugs into our ASDL line One to the electricity source. There were quite a few other cables and so I guess it will depend on what your system needs.
Some of the lights are actually numbered and this helps when determining initially if you are up and running and then whether you are connected, when required. We do not live in a massive house but it is a three bed roomed, reasonably sized one and we have not found any difficulties in connecting to the Internet via the Laptop in various parts of the house.
The Netgear Router came with an instruction leaflet and it is really simple if you follow the instructions. The problem we had was sorted with our ISP's helpdesk and it entailed making sure that your wireless connection has a password and not available for all and sundry.
Recommended and here's why.
For us especially, it has a bargain price. This router has a really fast connection speed. The Data transfer rate is 54 mbps Small, compact and so not intrusive on your work space. This router only measures width 17.5cms x depth 11.5cms x height 2.8cms. Lightweight, only weighs 300g Clean looking with it's white exterior. Reputable British brand. Firewall protection. Very easy to install and quick to have up and running.
I know the speed of our connection could be improved if we upgraded to a different option with Karoo but there are only so many pennies in a month. The Netgear Router however has the capability to handle much faster speeds than we are using at the moment and appears to be a trouble free product.
