Advantages: Easy installation, small, sturdy, quiet, auto uplink Disadvantages: Runs quite hot
cables.
Operation
Compatibility: Most recent PC's have at least a single gigabit Ethernet port on them now. Now you can make use of it. Tested fine with Intel Pro/1000 MT cards and nVidia nForce cards
Noise
It contains no fans so operation is completely silent, however, as with all other Netgearswitches, this unit gets quite hot. For peace of mind it would be best to keep it away from sources of heat (I tend to lay an old PII heatsink on the unit just to help with the cooling!)
Troubleshooting
The LED indicators provide you with all the information you could possibly need to help diagnose any connectivity problems - not that you should have any
Conclusion
Very fast, reliable equipment.
With prices for gigabit equipment coming down, now is a great time to upgrade ...
Yet another purchase for the office. The FS524 provides all your networking needs without a high price at £82.
As per my other reviews this is another business offering from Netgear with a very high build quality. Strong as an OX you might say.
The FS524 provides all the normal operations of a standard hub but with the adition of 10 or 100MBps intelligent switching. The unit automatically senses what the network speed of a plugged in device is and adjust accordingly.
All ports on the 524 are auto sensing for uplinks, so there is no need to be pressing buttons or playing with cables.
The other major bonus with the 524 is it comes rack mount ready. Small mounting brackets are provided so you can mount it directly into a standard 19" rack.
The front panel of the 524 is clear and easy to use. There is enough info there to tell you ...
Advantages: Cheap, Easy to configure Disadvantages: SFP GBIC ports are shared with copper ports, loud fan.
I haven't found a cheaper 16 port Gigabit Ethernet switch than this Netgear. This 19" rack or desk mountable switch has 16 copper ports and two SFP GBIC ports. The GBIC ports are shared with copper ports 15 & 16 - so you get to use either or, not both, which is a bit of a shame - but they do say it is a 16 portswitch after all... They have at least given you the option of adding either short or long range fibre capability to the switch.
The switch will work out of the box as if it were unmanaged, but then you'd be missing the point...
The switch is manageable via its built in web server, which provides an easy to use interface to all the common functions you would expect - 802.11Q VLAN tagging, Quality of Service, Jumbo frame support, 802.3ad link aggregation. You can upgrade the firmware using the web interface too, keeping ...

Manufacturer's product description
The ProSafe Gigabit Stackable Smart PoE (Power over Ethernet) Switches are specifically designed for growing small and mid-sized businesses (SMB) with advanced network needs for the support of multiple "the world" applications: Voice over IP (VoIP), a unified wired/wireless network, IP surveillance, converged video and data network and much more. It delivers the scalability, flexibility, reliability, and performance the SMB customers need in an affordable and easy-to-manage package. Each ProSafe Gigabit Stackable Smart PoE Switch comes with 24 10/100/1000 Mbps ports and four shared SFP ports. All ports support standards-based PoE and as a first in the industry, they also support IEEE 802.3at-based PoE+ on the first 4 ports of each switch, capable of providing up to 30W of power to higher-powered PoE devices such as dual-band N Wireless access points, videophones and IP cameras with pan/tilt/zoom capabilities. Coupled with auto voice VLAN feature, the switch greatly reduces the complexity of VoIP deployment, and makes it easy for SMBs to implement and manage a VoIP system on their network. The stacking feature on these switches provides the SMB with uncompromised performance, scalability and ease of network management. The only Gigabit Smart Stackable switches in the industry, they can be stacked through dedicated high-speed stacking ports (HDMI-based) with an aggregate 20 Gbps bandwidth, ensuring that the traffic between the stacked switches won't be compromised. Customers can scale up to 6 switches in one stack, and all of them can be easily configured and managed as one switch. Businesses can add switches to the stack as their network expands without making a big upfront investment at the beginning. Meanwhile, the stack's redundancy and hot-swappable capability help boost network resiliency. These switches come with a complete suite of advanced features such as access control lists (ACL), 802.1x port authentication, enhanced QoS, rate limiting and IGMP snooping, among others, to provide SMB businesses with more robust security, higher quality of service and high availability. An intuitive, Web browser interface provides simple yet comprehensive management, making it extremely simple to deploy and manage the advanced features, in order to realize the potential of a converged network and deliver lower total cost of ownership.
