Having used Netgear for many a year, the DG834Nwireless ADSL router does its job perfectly. I bought this item to replace the aging DG834G V2 which had decided to stop connecting to the internet!
This product is fairly large and roughly the size of a hardback book (slightly taller than a DVD case) After a month of having this I have had no problems and the connection is very stable including Streaming HD content from a wireless connection on a mac to a wired Xbox 360 via connect 360. works wonderfully. We have 4 pc's (2 wireless) and a mac (wireless) which work wonderfully when all connected.
The reason for its size is the multiple aerials (transmitters) needed for MIMO (Multiple-input multiple-output operations) are hidden inside and the router has two groups of three fitted. It incorporates the standard quad of Fast Ethernet switched ports and combines these with an integral ADSL2/2+ modem. the MIMO improves connectivity and reliability
It comes with a small plastic stand and must stand upright to enable sufficient airflow for cooling i suppose. aesthetically it looks very sleek and trendy with funky green LED lights and a touch of apple style.
Installation of this device was more or less exactly the same as the other netgear, same interface etc, very simple (possibly because the configurations were mosly there already from the last router, but pop the CD in and it will guide you through the settings) simply type 192.168.0.1 and enter admin for the username and password for the password and your in to fiddle with firewall settings and configuring your wireless settings. I am using this router with AOL.
Before with the old wireless router i could barely get a signal in the far reaches of the garden (200ft square garden) Now I can get a 3-4 bar signal which is ideal for those long summer days!
A 700MB video file was copied from the laptop over a close range open link to the mac in 101 seconds for an average speed of 53Mbit/sec and with WPA2 in action this only dropped down to 50Mbit/sec. Moving the laptop to the floor below and into the conservatory, atleast three/four walls in the way slowed Netgear down but not much with an open link delivering a more impressive 40Mbit/sec.
I bought this product from £89 but it can be found cheaper on ebay for around £60, just hunt around and you won't be disappointed.
overall I'd give this product 8/10, does the job and does it well.
be aware this is only a draft N router so the final artcile may differ, although i'm sure firmware updates may sort these issues out.
In order to get transfer speeds of 270mbit/s, 300mbit/s you will need to buy a network card from the same rangemax next range. this product works with 802.11 b/g and n.
Good – fast to install, does the job, stylish, sleek, fast connection transfers, HD streaming, long distance coverage.
Bad – yet to find any! wish i had a fast internet connection possibly?!
hopefully this hasn't sent you to sleep.
Thank you for taking the time to read.,
