I'm always being moaned at for hogging the computer so I decided to set up a network so both my girlfriend and I can access the internet from different parts of the house. In order to do this you need a wireless modem router to sit with the main PC and then for each additional PC you need to run off it you need a connection source, for a laptop computer you need a wireless network card (a USB variation is available for desktop pc's). I decided to purchase my card from Argos as I noted they had the same modem as the one I purchased. They had two different options a standard card priced £29.99 or a Rangemax card priced £49.99. As my router is was a Rangemax router I opted to get the same model card much to the disgust of my wallet.
Having already installed my router (please read my earlier review) this second part was even simpler. I simply installed the disc that came with the card and waited for the installation to be complete. After clicking OK two or three times the message "It's now safe to install your card" comes up on the screen. At this point I pushed the card into the slot and immediately a security screen came up. Once you enter the password which you set up at the time of installing the router your network is complete.
Speed wise the connection of your satellite PC has a speed of about twice that of dial up, rather like the very first ever broadband connections back in the 90's or ISDN as it was then better known. This can be a bit annoying at times especially if you have a high speed connection on your main set up. But for simple browsing the speed is perfectly acceptable. I read on Amazon that using this particular brand that the signal often drops off and disconnects, but I have yet to have this experience. Although the signal is less than half the maximum strength it has never disconnected on me.
I'm very pleased so far with my adventure into networking the whole set up was quick and simple. Certainly the Netgear brand made this an easy experience. A previous brands attempts by myself to set up a network failed miserably for me and was very complex to set up. With Netgear you can have everything up and running in less than 20 minutes.

Once you have the two pieces you have everything you need. So you could set up a home network for just £99 if you choose Netgear products. It could be a wise option that if you have been with your broadband provider for longer than 12 months you could nicely threaten to leave if they don't provide you with a wireless modem router, which is what I did. But I must highlight you select your wording well! Whatever make modem they send you I'd suggest it safer to by a network card or USB adapter of the same make.
Most importantly be sure the set up you buy is compatible with your network, Netgear are one of the few brands that cater for AOL.
Advantages: Fast, Easy installation, small, built in aerial Disadvantages: None
...a wireless card. Having a Netgear router, I decided to go for a Netgear card, and came away with the WPN511. Netgear is also a respected and trusted name in networking for homes and businesses, with a reputation for simple, functional and good value products.
The card itself is roughly credit card size, and about 5mm thick, with a roughly 30mm extension on the end that sticks out of the computer and contains the aerial and some lights. It is very ... ...a little harder with none Netgear networks, although wireless standards are all compatible, so it will work. It allows full use of most current wireless networks, with speeds of up to 108Mbps. Range depends on the router, and also environmental factors, but seems good. The router is in one of the front bedrooms, yet I've never had a problem accessing the network in the back garden. Again, I expect best results would be achieved with a Netgear router ...
