System
Requirements ************************ UNIX, Microsoft Windows 95/98, Apple MacOS, Novell NetWare, Linux, Microsoft Windows NT, Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition, Microsoft Windows 2000 / XP
Manufacturer Warranty ************************* 3 years warranty Price ****** I purchased my Netgear Router some 4 months when I was in the US from www.circuitcity.com. At that time the price was something like 79 USD now after all the mail in rebates the price is only 29 USD in the same place. The price in UK for the same product is around 52 to 60 GBP. Almost double, so it makes sense to buy these small things when you are on a Visit to US :).
Installation ************ I thought all I had to do was to plug in my broadband modem cable into this router. First the modem which I was using was having only a USB cable. So when I changed my broadband to Blueyonder, I ensured that I got a modem which has an ethernet cable. So after I got my new motoral modem from blueyonder I plugged in the cable into my router which had one port specifically mentioned for internet. It took some time for me to figure out that the first time I had to connect the ethernet cable also from the router to my laptop and that would fix the configuration for me automatically. I had my WGR511 wireless card also inserted in the provided slot in my laptop.
After the settings, I removed the ethernet cable from the router to the laptop and checked that it was working. The Installation guide and the user guide which comes along with the router is good and has the detailed desription of everything in it.
Range & Speed ****************** The first thing which I did was checking the speed. My broadband speed is only 1mb speed, whereas the capacity of this is 54 mbps, much much more than my broadband speed. So it never made any difference on the speed, whether i am using wireless or connected through wires.
The router is installed in my living room and I took my laptop to my bedroom and was easily getting the signals there also without any difference.
I also experimented with my friend who lives in an apartment two floors above me to try and access internet through my wireless network, for doing this he had to set up the Network name SSID as the same as was maintained in my machine and I had to disable the WEP security. With this he was also able to connect to the internet through my wireless network !!!!!
No of Users ************* A built-in switch lets you add up to four wired computers to your network with Ethernet cables. I am not sure of how many computers can be connected through wireless at least we have tried with two more computers and it has worked without any problems. So if you have two or more computers at home, all of them can be connected and can do their own browsing :) without interruptions.
