Just walk in - unless you've broken your leg, of course 09/01/2010

Advantages Many - walk in, x-rays, quicker than A&E, open every day
Disadvantages Consultant only attends once a week

Two falls on my way home from work in the snow and ice on Thursday 7th January left me with just a couple of bruises. On my way to work the following morning I tried to be extra careful but suddenly slipped onto my back while crossing an icy road. As I got up I was relieved that my back felt fine, but noticed quite a bit of pain in my left wrist, which must have hit the road. Unfortunately I am left-handed, and I was unable to write or put any pressure on my hand while at work. Walk in to a healthier lifestyle... 12/01/2003

Advantages no appointment needed, reasonable waiting time
Disadvantages can't x-ray, can't prescribe certain medication, can't work miracles!

When was the last time you went to see your doctor? If you’re anything like me then it was probably a long time ago. It is very rare that I bother going to the doctors for anything these days, if I’m feeling under the weather or a bit peaky I tend to go out to the nearest chemist and fill my handbag with all kinds of over-the-counter flu remedies, cough syrups, painkillers and pick-me-ups. Advantages Easily accessible, do not need an appointment, free
Disadvantages Tend to be located in cities, none in our area

Being a relatively inexperienced contributor to Ciao I haven't yet come up with a system for reading reviews. What I tend to do is read the reviews written by members on my list of friends and click on to other members who have also rated their reviews. It was while I was doing this that I came upon Amanda's review of the 'NHS Walk-in Centres', a topic which I have had some experience of and one which I have a strong opinion. NHS Walk in Center - good or bad ? 04/08/2006

Advantages No appointment necessary and is open til late at night
Disadvantages Don't have much equipment therefore can't xray etc and sometimes can give wrong diagnosis!

These little walk in centers have started popping up all over Britain now. You don't need an appointment as they are purely there for your convenience which can sometimes mean having to wait 5 minutes or an hour depending on when you go. Mmm handy! I hear you thinking. I thought so too and yes they can be ... if they diagnose you correctly. My sister's bad experience! Me and my sister are very very close and tell each other everything which is why she came to me when she began getting blinding pains in her abdomen and kept having to run off to the toilet even if nothing came out! Advantages Fantastic service, well looked after, prompt and efficient staff
Disadvantages Had to wait for a bit, but not as long as I was expecting!

~*THE SCENARIO*~ On Thursday evening, I had the very painful experience of falling over and landing knee cap down on a concrete sleeping policeman, (no I wasn't drunk, it was dark and I tripped!) Typical, I landed on the knee with an old skiing injury, so it's not the stronger of my two, and I grazed my knee through my jeans which wasn't very helpful at all! All weekend I've been hobbling about saying things like, "If it doesn't get better/if the swelling doesn't go down/if I still can't straighten it or put full pressure on it I'll get it looked at one Monday"...with the hope that it would ... more
