Having bought myself a Wii just over a year ago it's become one of the main vocal points in our lounge. We maybe don't play it as much as we should but it is slowly starting to get more and more use. The console interacts with your motions and movements to make things happen within the games and for that reason it needed a decent and innovative remote control. I wasn't particularly convinced by the Wii Remote when I first took it out of the box but it has certainly grown on me.
The Wii remote is completely wireless and operates using inferred to communicate with the Wii's sensor bar which sits in front of your TV or on top of it. The main downside to the Wii remote, as it is wireless, is that you will need to keep it supplied with batteries, however with pretty regular play over the last 14 months or so we've only had to change the batteries once. Once the batteries are in its very easy to link the Wiimote to your console, pressing the Synch button on the back of the remote and on the Wii console. A few seconds later and its all set up ready to go.
While the technology is incredibly innovative, the design is pretty innovative in itself. It fits nicely into the palm of your hand with your second index finger placed nicely on the trigger or "B" button. The rest of the Wiimote's buttons are on the top of the controller, but it's not overly cluttered with buttons and simply plays host to a direction pad, the "A" Button, a power switch, a home button and the 1 & 2 buttons. All these are used within various Wii games. The centre of the Wiimote also contains a small speaker, to feed in game sound effects to the Wiimote.
At the bottom of the Wiimote is a connection point for the Wii Nun chuck, which is optional for most games. This is sold separately from the Wii remote and is an easy way for Nintendo to make a bit of extra cash as they retail for a joint price of around £41. The price has come down slightly since it was first released but it still seems slightly on the expensive side.
The Wiimote works in a series of different ways. With the use of an internal intelligence system it can tell which way the Wiimote is being held, either vertically or horizontally and also detects the movements being made. Obviously this can take a bit of getting used to whilst using the Wiimote but it does make for a unique gaming experience. Using this technology it allows you to do things like bowling, golf and various other sports that involve a lot of movement.
Of course this has led to stories of people letting go of their Wiimote's and smashing up various household appliances such as TV's. In order to stop this the Wiimote has a wrist strap which when used properly will stop the Wiimote from going anywhere, even if you do accidentally let go of it, it won't actually go anywhere.
Overall the Wiimote is a very clever design from Nintendo. It works incredibly well and as Nintendo are coming up with more and more little additions to make the Wiimote a little easier to use, such as a protective padded cover and rechargeable battery pack. The Wiimote can also be used with a variety of different attachments like the steering wheel for Mario Kart and the Guitar for Guitar Hero. All in all despite the price of £28 for just the Wiimote it is a very good control system that really emphasises just how clever the Wii system actually is.

It's a great invention indeed, I love how the buttons are placed exactly where you need them and theres no need to hunt about in the middle of a game for the one you need as it is where you would expect it to be...x
