First let me state, I do not own a Geforce 2 GTS graphics card YET but when I buy a new card in the next few months this will be top of my shopping list. My nVidia TNT 2 Pro graphics card is becoming a little long in the tooth and I have a need....a need for speed.
So why the Geforce 2 GTS, rather than it's big brother the ULTRA, or indeed it's little brother the MX?
To understand you first need to know the differences. The Geforce 2 Ultra is exactly the same chip as the GTS except for one respect. Ultra chips are hand picked because they will run at a higher clock speed. That's not to say that the GTS won't run at the same speed. Both chips come off the same production line and from what I have researched on the net, GTS chips come very close 90% of the time. So the only real difference is the price. Ultra based cards cost over £300 at present while GTS Pro cards can be found for under £200, sometimes even lower.
So if price is the stumbling block then surely the MX is the better option. Not necessarily. You see my next graphics card will have to last at least 18 months, and I can't envision a Geforce 2 MX being able to do that. While the card is the best budget graphics card is the best ever released, it is a cut down version of the Geforce 2, much like the difference between my true TNT 2 and a TNT2 M64. The budget end of the market is very cut throat and probably where most of the money is to be made, so budget chipsets based on the cream of the crop must be hobbled so that the manufacturers don't cut their own throats.
But there are even differences in the Geforce 2 GTS family, with a new Pro version, which runs at higher than normal speeds but not as high as the Ultra. The real world performance of these Pro chips is very close to the Ultra in many respects, so that's another nail in the Ultra's coffin.
The beauty of nVidia chipsets has always been it's unified driver which caters for all of it's graphics cards, enabling new drivers to be released very frequently, with support across the whole range. Having had the experience of a TNT 2 I do not envision any problems installing a Geforce 2.
As I have a 17" monitor, running at 1024 x 768 @ 32bit then there is no physical need for anything more than a Geforce 2 GTS. There isn't a game that has been created that will not play smoothly on my system once the card is installed, for at least the next 18 months. If you only have a 15" monitor and don't plan to buy a new one for some time then even the GTS is too powerful for it's cost. You are the person that nVidia had in mind when it created the MX.
I have researched my new purchase, exhaustively, scouring the internet's hardware sites and have been able to test a card in a local computer shop. Having also had experience with a Radeon based card and an Ultra, I consistently favoured the Geforce 2 GTS, even though ATI's Radeon cards have tumbled in price. Recent experiences with ATI's technical support have soured me against the firm and I can honestly say that the only way I would ever own one was if I had been given it.
Advantages: Very Very fast Disadvantages: Needs quicker memory to keep up with the core speed
...games, but its something that Nvidia can improve on in the future. The memory speed has to be increased faster than 6ns which would cost them a fortune at the moment. It has all the other features that you would expect from the Nvidia GPU such as Hardware T&L. The core has been known to clock to 250Mhz which is blistering speed for a video card at the moment. However Not all cards reach this kind of speed it depends on the quality of the individual ... ...seems that overclocking the core speed does not make that much difference to gameplay FPS, this is due to the fact that the memory is the bottle neck, to get more FPS (should you really need it) you need to have a go at overclocking the memory, this gives you more memory bandwidth to keep up with the speedy GPU, all in all more fps more power, but watch for the stabilty, slight jerks and program lockups very much hint at the fact that your card is ...

Advantages: very quick, top technology Disadvantages: cost, equalled by the cheaper ATI Radeon for performance
Theres no doubting that this is one hell of a quick card. It is on a par just about with what in my opinion is the best buy graphics card of the moment, the ATI Radeon. In the benchmarks i've seen, the Radeon nicks it in some areas and the GeForce 2 nicks it in other areas, however the Radeon is a lot cheaper and therefore in my opinion nicks it overall, despite both being the same for speed. You can get several variations of the GeForce 2 at the ... ...probably the most controversial of all, the 32 Mb AGP GeForce 2 MX. This is a cut down version of the GeForce 2 and can be picked up for around £110-00. This is a good price for a card offering things like DDR and performance in between a GeForce 256 DDR and a GeForce 2 GTS. If you are looking for a quick card at the moment and money is no object then you will undoubtably look no further than the GeForce 2 or the ATI Radeon. I can find very little ...

Advantages: High resolution - low cost Disadvantages: Display unsatisfactory except at 1440 x 900 resolution
I recently bought one of these as a special offer and was initially very disappointed because the display was smeared at all the resolutions available with my GeForceGTS driver.
I tried all available resolutions on my graphics card from 800 x 600 through 1024 x 768, 1280 x 1024. Nothing made the font look good across the whole screen.
I finally fixed this by downloading a product called PowerStrip which enabled me to create a custom 1440 x 900 display resolution for my graphics card ( nVidiaGeForce2GTS). At this resolution it works very well for me (although I'm not a gamer, I just wanted a bigger and higher resolutiuon screen).
Now I've got used to the higher resolution I'm beginning to like it. Unless you are prepared to get the driver corrected I would not recommend this product for home-office use. ...

Advantages: 64mb DDR memory, very very quick, cheaper than GF2 Disadvantages: costs a fair bit
This is the premier graphics card available at the moment, on a par with the NvidiaGeForce2GTS. Trust me I have seen this card in action and it absolutely flies along. It has all the advanced features you'd expect from a graphics card nowadays, like 64Mb of DDR memory and a big whopping GPU to go alongside.
I6t is also priced very competitively in comparison with the GeForce2. I have seen many benchmarks that show these cards neck and neck in a right old ding dong battle. Then way back is the Voodoo 5 5500 and the GeForce2 MX. However, you are talking nearly $425 for the GeForce2 and yet a 64Mb Radeon can be found for around $350. This is a significant price advantage with going with the Radeon, particularly as there is nothing to tell between the two cards.
For people with plenty of money intent on building an absolutely ...

Manufacturer's product description
The NVIDIA GeForce2 family represents the second generation of graphics processing units (GPUs). These GPUs offer even better geometry processing power and transform and lighting than the original GPU, GeForce 256. The GeForce2 family also offers per-pixel operations, such as per-pixel shading, which allows software developers to present finer detail and better effects so your onscreen experience is even more realistic. All of the GeForce2 GPUs represent the best in 3D graphics today, but NVIDIA offers a range of solutions to serve the varied needs of the gaming enthusiast, corporate end user, and home user. The original per-pixel shading GPU, GeForce2 GTS provides a high-performance graphics, gaming, and HDTV solution.
