"Nothing available now touches it for the money"

I bought my Abit Siluro Geforce 2mx graphics card a few months ago now, and I havent regretted it at all since. The card is based on the Nvidia Geforce 2 chip, albeit a cut-down version using cheaper memory. This cheap memory is the main performance-limiting factor on the card, but this can be improved. The Abit card I bought comes with software that allows you to overclock both the core and memory on the card. This increases the speed, but also the heat so care must be taken. The card has 32mb of memory, which is more than sufficient for all of the current games (although 64mb cards are becoming available).

Even without overclocking, the Geforce 2mx is a fast card. Yes, you can get faster; a Geforce 2 Ultra for example. Whilst this may increase the performance of the computer, the price is increased massively (around 3 to 4 times). If you want the ultimate performance then by all means spend £350 on a graphics card. If you want a good compromise between performance and price, then spend £100 on a Geforce 2mx. If you are more interested in fantastic image quality, an ATI Radeon may be more suited to you. However, a Geforce 2mx is by no means poor in this area.

The card comes with a helpful feature called Twinview. This allows 2 monitors to be connected to the card, which can be very useful. Uses include showing 2 different views in a game, or showing two views of a graphics editing program (e.g. one zoomed in and one a general overview). Not all Geforce 2mx cards have the necessary ports to enable this, but it is easy to tell which do by reading the specification of the product.

My card has been totally reliable since I bought it, even with some overclocking. Thoroughly recommended especially as Nvidia release updated drivers frequently, ensuring the maximum possible performance from the card.

It isn't that it uses cheaper memory, but the fact that the memory bus is 128 bit for SDRam or 64 bit for DDRRam. The true geforce uses 128 bit DDRRam, allowing double the bandwidth. The MX also only has half the rendering pipelines of the true Geforce. Saying that you are quite right about it having the best performance to cost ratio, but that looks like being overtaken in May, when the retail version of the Kyro 2 is released. (check out www.anandtech.com for more details about the Kyro 2 chip.) Good opinion, but I'm going to wait for the Kyro 2, I think. Cheers - Craig.

Manufacturer's product description

GeForce2 MX brings the power of NVIDIA's second-generation graphics processing units (GPU) to desktop PCs and Apple Power Mac computers. The result - the same stunning visual experience PC users expect from NVIDIA GPUs. Leveraging the second-generation architecture of the GeForce2 GTS, GeForce2 MX is a robust GPU at mainstream price points. GeForce2 MX uniquely incorporates Digital Vibrance Control (DVC), which makes all images - including 2D, 3D, and video - brighter and crisper, even on digital flat panels, with the flexibility of the TwinView dual-display architecture. With this graphic card Hewlett-Packard offers you the leading edge graphic technology with 2D/3D graphic performance. This card is Dual head, one is VGA and one is DVI. This accessory is kitted with an additional adaptor allowing you to switch your DVI port to a 2nd VGA port.
