Graphics cards are so many in todays technology oriented world. When looking to but a graphics card most people do not know what is worth looking for.
There are so many different makes and model on the market that it can become confusing to decide which make and model to buy. I am an online gamer in my spare time. I like to tinker around with the hardware I buy to see if i can get faste speeds than it was made to run. If you want a card that will give you gaming performance at a reasonable price then the NVIDIA GeForce 8400GS is a good choice. these cards can be overclocked. My cards stock performance:
GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) runs at 460 MHZ (Mega Hertz) DDR2 memory speed is 350 MHZ Shader Clock 1112 MHZ
I have overclocked it without buying extra cooling hardware to more than what is normal and it still runs like a dream. when I first started playing Grand Theft Auto IV I would get 13.7 frames per second. Considering the game needs 30 FPS to run smoothly my card did not work well.
I clocked the card to:
GPU 580 MHZ = increase of 120 MHZ Memory Clock 460 MHZ = increase of 110 MHZ Shader Clock 1524 = increase of 412 MHZ
My max temperature on this stock card with no overclocking is 58 degrees, overclocked 76 degree. I have an increase in GTA IV of 15 frames per second. Instead of giving me 13.7 fps I now get 28.7 frames per second.
My friend uses a Geforce 8600GTS and his stock output for GTA IV is 32 FPS. His card cost £22 more than mine. For anyone who likes to overclock, the NVIDIA GeForce 8400GS is a great card.
these are the specification:
Package Contents Low Profile Bracket Quick Installation Guide Driver CD Memory Clock 800MHz RAMDACs 400MHz Memory Type DDR2 Engine Clock 450MHz Memory Interface 64-bit Chipset NVIDIA GeForce 8400GS Warranty 2 Years Product Name Nvidia GeForce 8400GS PCI-E 2.0 RET Compatible OS Windows XP, Windows Vista DirectX Support 10.0 Max. Resolution 2560x1600 Interface PCI Express 2.0 OpenGL Support 2.1 Video Memory 256MB
Special Features Graphics+ with CUDA, PhysX True 128-bit floating point HDR lighting NVIDIA ForceWare Unified Driver Architecture NVIDIA PureVideo HD technology Low Profile for DVI-I and S-Video (no support for VGA) Connectors VGA HDMI DVI-I
As an overclocker gaming performance can be gained without having to spend lots of money. I would recommend for gaming to buy one with a fan on it. The cards without fans are very bad for overclocking. Stay away from fanless Geforce 8400GS's as they crash when overclocked. gaming cards equal fans. Desktop Publishing = Fanless
An all round good quality low cost and low voltage gaming card.
