On a recent trip to Tescos straight after work I was feeling peckish so headed over to the crisps and biscuits section. I was looking for something on the 'healthier side' so went for Nairn's cheese oatcakes, which were on offer at 84p at the time (they're normally £1.19). This was not the first time I'd bought these - I've been buying oatcakes for several years, although not on a regular basis. I find them really handy to have in my bag when out and about or when going abroad so that I don't have to buy snacks. Incidently Nairn's also do oatcakes in other varieties, both sweet (two varieties - mixed fruit and ginger) and non-sweet (rough, finely milled, herb and pumpkin seed), all of which I've tried at some point. The other 'savoury' oatcakes are a bit plain on their own and really need something to go with them so I went for the cheese ones which I knew tasted nice on their own.

The oatcakes themselves come in packs of 6. There are 4 of these 6 packs in a box, each individually wrapped, which I find quite handy to have on the go. I'd actually prefer if they came in packs of 3 or 4 as I can't get through 6 at a time. They have a nice cheesy flavour that isn't too over-powering. The oatcakes are fairly healthy in that they contain no hydrogenated fat, no artificial colours or preservatives, no added sugar and no GM ingredients. Oats are also high in soluble fibre and slow enegy release carbohydrates which may keep you feeling full for longer. The recipe and factory is stated to be nut free, but the ingredients cannot be guaranteed to be.

The biscuits are nice on their own or can be eaten with houmous, soup or any other dips. Each biscuit contains 39 calories, 2.3g fat (1.0g saturates) and 0.14g salt (0.1g sodium) -this is ok if you're having a couple, but if you munch your way through the 6 pack (and this is not hard as I found them quite moreish) then the calories soon add up!

Overall, I really like Nairn's oatcakes and they're a fairly healthy alternative to crisps and biscuits. Give them a go!!

I do like a good oatcake. Re. the packet size - I think the manufacturers typically envisage them as a lunch replacement, not so much a crisp like snack.

I've only tried the plain ones so far, but I saw the stem ginger ones in TESCO STORES this week and bought a pack to try . . . ♥ jes ♥
