Nakamichi Soundspace 8 1/2

Advantages: Style, size, sound quality
Disadvantages: None really

...The last time I bought a hi-hi it was over 10 years ago and it was obvious when looking at the system. A selection of very large black hi-fi seperates joined together with metres and metres of cabling. Not too good in my stylish flat...the CD player was starting to wear out too. It had to go! Having spent over a £1000 on my car system it needed to be good for me to be satisfied with the sound, but needed to be sleek and stylish so that it didn't dominate the appearance of the room. That's where the problem was - good sound quality normally means boring design and good design normally means poor sound quality. Not strictly true, but there are very few that combine the two for around £1000. I noticed the Nakamichi SoundSpace 8 as soon as I got to the hi-fi dealer. ...controls to control the amplifiers that are in each of the speakers. The speakers are attached by RJ45 connections and as I said have the amplifiers built in, hence the 8 wires required to connect them, and not the usual 2, they sound amazing, slightly more beefy on the lower volumes when you wake up, but you have the choice of turning off the loudness button at these volumes, unlike their recommendations, the higher volumes (on a scale of 1 to 10- 1 and above) there is no need for the loudness which increase the bass of the audio. I initially thought the speaker covers look very 60’s, but they seem to grown on me and are very well manufactured, as is the entire unit. The SS1 sounds not only fantastic for its size, but solely fantastic, there’s huge bass (for its size and not worth the bother of a sub, and you haven’t got the availability... Read review

Advantages: 5 disk changer, DTS, Multi Region
Disadvantages: not that featured with mp3 playback etc.

...I've owned this player for about 2 years now and have been very happy with it. it is possible to make this player multi region there is a website with instructions on how to do it. the sound quality and picture qualty is excellent on dvd's and i also use it as my cd player and it sounds amazing even on plain audio cd's. another advantage of this player is the 5 disk data bank where all the cd's go in and out of the same place no big tray like most 5 disk changers. i have had a few problems with playing some region 1 dvd's on it but have always got there in the end a power off and on normal sorts it out....
