William Chase Vodka.

I was given a bottle of this for my birthday last year and still have quite a bit left of it. It is unusual in that it is actually made with potatoes and is made in England. Most of my friends know how much I like vodka and for birthdays or Christmas hunt out unusual vodkas from around the world.

What is Chase Vodka.

Chase Vodka is distilled in Herefordshire where Chase farm produces the potatoes that are grown specifically for the vodka. It took two years to produce the first bottle of Vodka for sale and it went on sale for the first time in 2008. In 2010 it was voted as the world’s best vodka in the San Francisco spirits competition it won a gold Medal and is recorded as being the first super premium vodka.

Distilation.

There are a lot of processes that go into making the vodka. First it is all mashed up and boiled down and left to ferment where after being mashed the liquid is extracted and it then goes through a process of distillation. Not once but five times in a 70 foot copper still with 42 bubble plates the only one of its kind in Europe. Finally it is cold chill filtered leaving a very smooth velvety tasting vodka.

Packaging.

The vodka came in a clear bottle that is in a black box and has the distinctive Chase vodka written in black over a white embossed tree on the bottle and a small Union Jack. The black box has a little union Jack flag hanging on the side of the box.

The taste.

Opening the vodka the vodka smelt a little like buttery mash potato. I found the vodka to be smooth and creamy tasting however for me just one glass of this little beauty goes straight to my head and I feel extremely tiddly. I have never had more than one glass at a time of this rather potent vodka due to the rapid effect it has on me. Whether it is due to the fact that it is so purely distilled and passes through the blood brain barrier I have no idea but that is the reason why I still have half a bottle left.

Price and availability.

I would not say that it was an everyday drink but more for special occasions.
I understand that it costs around £32.95 per 70 cl bottle and is available in high end liquor stores and as well as Waitrose, John Lewis and Harvey Nichols. It is available in miniature sizes of 5CL up to 300CL at a whopping £145. They also produce a marmalade vodka too although I have not tried this one yet.

Would I recommend this vodka?

Yes but only for a gift for special occasions. For me it is a lovely premium vodka, smooth and creamy but just a little of it makes me quite tipsy although it is only 40% proof. I think that this is probably due to its purity as it does not happen to me with other vodkas even stronger 50% proof vodkas. I would probably only buy this vodka as an unusual special gift A) because it is made in England and B) because it is made of potatoes and C) because of its smooth and creamy taste.
