Sunglasses after Dark - Hunter of the Hidden Races
Review of Sunglasses After Dark - Nancy A. Collins by  Guzman

Advantages: Stunning read, excellent penmanship and good use of very gritty descripive language
Disadvantages: None

...at vastly accelerated rates. Lastly we find that she is also immune to silver marking her as a unique creature within this mythos. Throughout the book we are exposed to an inner beast referred to only as the Other. Whenever Sonja’s mental grasp on this creature slips it immediately strikes out at its keeper. It is an interesting insight that other books of this genre have largely ignored simply by paying lip service to the lost humanity of the creature. The constant conflict between Sonja and the Other is a source of real interest throughout the book in fact I would say throughout the trilogy (Sunglasses after Dark, In The Blood and Paint It Black). As a result of this conflict and the style that Nancy A. Collins uses throughout the narrative of Ms Blue’s life and unlife, the horror of what Sonja realises herself to be slowly... Read review

Blood, Smoke and Audiotape
Review of Blood and Smoke (Audio Book) - Stephen King (Narrator) by  Soho_Black

Advantages: The stories are quite good
Disadvantages: They are now also available in printed form

...be better with another reader, and would probably work better if it were written down, and you could take a bit more time over it. The final story, "Lunch at the Gotham Café" is the only previously published story in this collection. It was in an anthology called "Dark Love", published in 1995 and edited by Nancy Collins, Edward Kramer and Martin Greenberg and, at £6.99, is well worth a look. It is interesting that this story was commissioned originally for it's links with love, rather than smoking, and fits in better with the theme of that collection, rather than this one. This story also indicates the lie on the packaging of this collection, promising as it does "three unabridged short stories", as the printed version of this story is longer. The missing parts are not essential to the story, but do add some nice touches, and there are a few... Read review

Deliciously Naughty
Review of Tipping the Velvet - Sarah Waters by  Row26

Advantages: Naughty but with plot and feeling
Disadvantages: A happy but predictable ending

...I found this book to be a refreshing exploration of sexual identity and preference as well a truly entertaining read. There is a surprising honesty about the feelings Nancy experiences and I am sure that anyone who has had to come to terms with their sexuality in an unaccepting world will be able to relate to some of the characters and their experiences. Compared to other Sarah Waters' books such as Affinity, Tipping the Velvet is more openly a lesbian novel, with the sexuality of the characters and love between Nancy and the women she forms relationships with being the main focus throughout the book. It's well written and deviously descriptive; there's love, betrayal, history, secrets, lies and deliciously naughty sex. What more could you want?! The book follows Nancy Astley a Whitstable oyster girl who, after meeting music hall... Read review

One hot dog!
Review of Red Dog - Louis De Bernieres by  kirstymack80

Advantages: 119 pages
Disadvantages: 119 pages

...of when the author went to Perth in 1998 to attend a literary dinner. He came upon a bronze statue of a dog and it interested him enough to return to Western Australia a few months later and travel around gathering stories about ‘Red Dog’. He finds out Red Dog is a loner, he travels from town to town relying on the help of strangers who take pity on him. He’s smelly and scavenges for food when no one is around. The townspeople take delight in seeing what they can pass off as food to Red Dog – paper bags, used tissues and socks being among them – hey, Red’s not fussy and will eat anything! He’s taken in by Jack and Maureen Collins who name the dog Tally Ho. But eventually they move 350 kms away and while en route the dog leaves nasty smells in the car, and they reluctantly leave him in the middle of nowhere, unable to stand the stench... Read review
