Most nappy liners are one way which means that any urine is tucked away in the nappy. It also collects, for want of a better term, any poo that you baby does. To be honest, a cotton nappy without a liner is an absolute mess - my worst nightmare about the whole process! Nappy liners make using real nappies easy - all you do is slip it in on top of the nappy and fasten as normal and it keeps all the nasty poo on the surface so you can just throw or flush it all away without having to wash it (that is if you use disposable liners) however even the fleece and fabric liners are easier and less horrible to clean than the actual nappy - so there is your more enviro friendly option!
