I'm not someone who shies away from techie developments generally, but I admit I was sceptical for a long while about the security of internet banking. That said, I'm now a very satisfied and regular user of natwest.com, and I'll try to explain why.
I've been with Natwest a long time now (about 8 years), and for the past 5 years or so have taken advantage of their very slick telephonebanking service, Actionline. Then, around 6 months ago, they completely changed Actionline around, and not for the better in my opinion - too complicated. So I started looking at the alternative, at natwest.com.
= THE SITE =======
It's a well-presented, fairly unpretentious-looking site. Natwest logos and branding everywhere, with no further advertising or irritating popups. Account holders with Natwest need to register with the service, which takes a short while followed by a wait of a couple of days for your service to be set up. == SECURITY ========
Once set up, you're provided with a fair amount of security details. You have your 10 figure customer number, which is actually easy to remember because it consists of your DoB followed by a 4 figure PIN.
On top of this, you have your own password (minimum 6 letters) and PIN number (min 4 characters), providing two further levels of security.
If all this sounds like a lot of bother, just think what a nightmare it could be if someone did hack into your account. Why, in my case, they could nick at least five quid...
Logging in, then, can be a little time-consuming (around 1 min or so) but I for one feel this is a necessary evil to minimise fraud. =========== WHAT'S IT GOT THEN? =================
Once in the service, you can do all you need to: instant access to your balance, statements, Natwest Credit Card details if you have one, order cheque and paying-in books, and so on.
But the really useful service is the "Manage Money" feature. You can pay off your Natwest credit cards, manage direct debits, pay all your household bills. The bills feature is brilliant: no mucking around working out account details for the company you want to pay; they have hundreds of accounts set up for most of the ususal suspects: BT, Orange, British Gas, Powergen, etc, etc. So within a few clicks you've paid your gas bill. Fantastic.
You can also set up third-party payments, so if you want to make regular payments to a relative or business associate, all you need are their account number and sort code. Very, very quick and easy.
================ IS IT WORTH REGISTERING? ======================
Absolutely. I now only go into the bank to pay in cheques, which is once in a blue moon. I can, with confidence in security, pay all my bills whenever I like, check my balance, statements and so on. It's a great service, and in my mind the future of banking.
I don't have any other online banking service to compare Natwest to, but I do know that Which? magazine found it to be the best.
Advantages: Time saving,instant access and availability Disadvantages: Unable to transfer monies from all types of accounts including international payments
Advantages: Great online banking, good bonuses with student account, problems dealt with perfectly Disadvantages: Problems with Maestro card, long queues at peak times, not all branches have extended opening
