I joined the Nationwide Building Society ( a mutual building society) in 1973, originally with the prospect of obtainging a mortgage when I got married. I am still a member today. The interest rate I recieve on my account is around 1% (before tax). I also have an account with Direct Line bank (a non - mutual) and obtain almost the same amount in interest from Direct Line for £6 in one account than I do for £100 in Nationwide. Although its not quite comparing like for like, (direct line takes three days to transfer money to my account, and Nationwide is over the counter, it still shows the different interest rate that can be obtained. As a member of Nationwide for almost 30 years I do not consider myself to be a "carpetbagger", but I think it's time for Nationwide to convert to a bank, allowing me to be given a reward for the years of loyalty and low interest I have been given my the Nationwide.

I agree that some accounts do give reasonable rates, but not the account I have, of course I could change to a different one, but how many times will I have to change to keep the best rates, as they do change them.

I find this odd. I have a flex account with e-savings activated. The e-savings gives me 6.7% net and I can transfer cash between accounts overnight. So wages into flex account then most of it into e-savings which I transfer back as I need it. They've also been very helpful with everything I've done with them. Which is more that I can say for TSB / Natwest / Barclays and Abbey National.
I'd prefer them to stay mutual.

I'll second that, I have been a member for 15 years.
Advantages: Cheapest way to have foreign cash and make purchases Disadvantages: Without a backup source of money or payment system, if it fails for whatever reason, then you could have a problem. But that applies to whatever method chosen. The foreign bank that owns the ATM could charge a handling fee, but that applies to all cards.
Advantages: Good rates and account options - online services are good Disadvantages: Customer service isn't great - the live to serve their shareholders
