I have been with nationwide for many years and they have certainly improved. They have a wide range of accounts but best of all must be their Flex account. Once opened, it can be assessed on-line and money transferred from account to account with relative speed and ease.
One of its best assets is its debit card. If you travel abroad and need to draw out local currency, the card will let you but, you DONT incur any extra charges or fee's. You'll simply get charged the exchange rate for the amount. Well worth just for that reason alone.
Their interest rates are reasonable and, with many branches around, its not hard to get access. Morgage rates are quite good with competitive trackers.
The account comes with a cheque book but you dont have to use them. The branches also have cheque book sized ledges to keep track of your transactions.
The internet access is very useful. You can move money around your accounts with ease and its instant! No waiting or messing about. You can also transfer money to other peoples accounts with ease, though you do need the account details. The internet access also allows you to e-mail them direct. Be aware the replies can be slow to come back but, when they do, its flagged up on your account and is very obvious.
EXTRA INTEREST: want some. Dont we all. Quite simply open their on-line E-Savings. It pays a good rate of interest. But swop money into it when you can. Suppose you get paid at the start of the month and that your morgage goes out mid month. Move the morgage money into the E-Savings on your pay day & move it back when the morgage is due to the paid. That way the money earns lots of extra interest.
But however you do it, if you go abroad, take the account card with you. As I've stated, its FEE FREE when you draw out cash from ATM's. Enjoy!
How helpful would this review be to a person making a buying decision? Rating guidelines
Advantages: Cheapest way to have foreign cash and make purchases Disadvantages: Without a backup source of money or payment system, if it fails for whatever reason, then you could have a problem. But that applies to whatever method chosen. The foreign bank that owns the ATM could charge a handling fee, but that applies to all cards.
Advantages: Good rates and account options - online services are good Disadvantages: Customer service isn't great - the live to serve their shareholders
