An Amazing Read For Animal Lovers

Advantages: Extremely Interesting, Great Photos
Disadvantages: None

...down and watch documentaries on the TV with each other. Out of all the natural history documentaries my favourites and my dad's favourites were those presented by David Attenborough. When the series 'The Life Of Mammals' was shown on TV I watched every episode and found it fascinating and although I was at uni and my dad was at home I knew that he was also watching the series so when Christmas came round I new exactly what to buy him. Yes you've ...
...The book is split up into ten different chapters with each one looking at a different group of mammals which are divided up into the food they eat as Attenborough says this is the easiest way to categorise mammals and with 50 years of experience on the field I'm not going to argue with him. I found all of these chapters extremely interesting and full of interesting facts, some of which I hope to share with you during this review. The first chapter ...

Silent Fields by Roger Lovegrove

Advantages: Very detailed account of the subject matter
Disadvantages: None

Silent Fields This book is a sickening book to read, but it is a book that I can thoroughly recommend, in any case. It is a long, comprehensive and detailed book by Roger Lovegrove detailing the long decline of the wildlife of Britain. I believed that the decline of wildlife in Britain was a result of the overuse of chemical fertilisers and chemical pesticides in Britain after the war. And whilst it is true that this has certainly exacerbated ...
...not by a long way. The book details the long and systematic destruction of the wildlife of Britain. Lovegrove has meticulously researched a diverse number of historical sources dating back to the Tudor times to the present day. The records show that the history of the persecution of some of what were supposedly the best-loved species of wildlife (and, indeed amongst these, some of the rarest) has left our countryside all the poorer. It points out ...

Simon knows the name of things.

Advantages: A celebration of nature
Disadvantages: You might be an anorak

How to be a Bad Bird Watcher is a wonderful lyrical celebration of nature. Simon Barnes writes with humour and passion. If there is one thing I am a sucker for, it’s enthusiasm and he has it in spades. He describes my kind of bird watching, that is observing the habits and flights of birds. This is not for those who like ticking off lists but a philosophy of enjoyment. He explains everything in a simple and down to earth fashion. This is a book for ...
...a way my experience describes how he sees a bad birdwatcher. He says you can start with the birds in your garden and you will be surprised at how many birds you already know. I have spent 6 months trying to encourage goldfinches into my garden with a special feeder, filled with niger seed that is the equivalent of caviar to them. When eventually a pair arrived with their distinctive red eye bar and bright yellow wing stripe it was a wonderful sight ...

Undoubtedly the best photography book I have ever seen!

Advantages: Amazing photography & truly inspirational!
Disadvantages: none

...But I will give it a go... I went to an exhibition of the work of Nick Brandt (the author) in London last week, and was captivated from the minute I walked in. The prints were stunning, and when I saw that he had books on sale in the gallery with all of the exhibition prints in, I knew there was no way I was leaving without one! FRONT COVER: A simple cover, with the title of the book and the author's name at the top, then one of Nick's striking elephant ...
...apparent favourite Elephants are but a few of the animals featured in this stunning book. The first photograph is of two giraffes, locked in an intimate position. The next page is an amazing double page spread of a huge herd of zebra's (literally hundreds!) crossing a river. This image has clearly been taken with a wide angle lens, and this not only catches the atmosphere, but gives the image a real sense of place. There are two images after this ...

Full of stunning imagery

Advantages: lots of stunning large-scale photos, intriguing accompanying text
Disadvantages: Some might find writing style little dry

'The Natural Wonders of The World' is an intriguing book that sets out to describe the most spectacular phenomena of the natural world through a series of dramatic images, including pictures of vast mountain ranges, ominous skies, endless deserts, churning seas, labyrinthine river systems and huge gorges and falls. Consisting of almost 200 near-A4 sized pages, the book is broken down into six chapters, namely The Earth's Surface, The Plant Kingdom, ...
...that describes how the various natural phenomena came to be, as well as how the transient species of man has incorporated them into his traditions and belief systems throughout the millennea . The book is great for browsing though and letting the pictures leap out of you, but the text is equally mind-boggling in the timescale and levels of force that it encompasses. Its quite an old book now but its not exactly the kind of thing that dates much, ...
