I actually, until a couple of days ago, hadn't played this game for ages and ages. Oh weep weep though, the memories came floodin back strong, so I've come back to the op to just give it a little tweak.
To be honest, I have never in my life seen such an amazing game (I don't play many games, but you get my drift!!)!! The graphics could hardly be better. Everything is just so detailed. When driving, you get a choice of 4 positions to play from. Just the windscreen, windscreen and dashboard, close up behind the car, and a the best one in my opinion, the over the back view from more of a distance. With this view, you can even see the driver (thats you - you get to pick an identity picture) as he turns the wheel, and changes gear.
At the start of the game, you have a number of options. This appears to be kind of 2 games in 1. You can pick the evolution mode, which lets you start in one of the old 1950's Porches, and then build your way up through to one of the new 911 Turbos. Or you can choose to run the factory mode. On this you can start as a junior testdriver for the Porche team. This is a good thing to do at the start, because in your duties as a testdriver, you learn about the controls quite quickly. They send you around courses, (apparently testing cars) trying to beat certain times on tracks set up out of cones, or you might be driving through the mountains or town. On completion of each one of these, you are set a harder one (so you must improve to advance any further). When you comlete a certain number of tasks, you might gain promotion from your junior status. You'll then start getting more fun things to do, and you'll get free cars along with it.
The EVOLUTION mode though is what the games all about. You will be competing in races set in different countries all over Europe. Conditons will vary. Snow in the Alps, to bright sunshine in France and Spain.
You start the game with a total of 8000 credits (£££££?????). With this 8000, you can enter the garage and select the car you want to buy (obviously for upto £8000). These are factory cars so are very slow (you'll be able to upgrade them later when you've won some money). The slowness of these old cars at the start really can get a bit annoying, but I urge people to stick with it. They really do speed up after a while.
You'll need to insure that you are winning enough money to be able to repair yourcars when they need it. Damage done to cars is measured with percentages, and have a direct affect on the cars handling and speed.
After you've won a few races, you'll be able to afford a new car or two. Each time you complete a tournament, the choice of cars available to you in the garage will change. They'll improve with time. You really do kind of start off in the 1950's so what you have available to you at the start is the best you can get. More become available as Porche design them as the years go on (and the years go on by you winning tournaments).
You don't always have to buy NEW cars in the garage. There's also a massive USED car businness. Here you can pick up some real bargains. I would recommend spending time here, buying cars cheaply, and then paying for them to be fixed. Thier values will go up dramatically when you do this, and you'll always make a profit by selling them straight on again. I earnt millions in this way. Then you can afford to enter as many tournaments as you like (you do have to pay to enter. Price depends on the era), and you can buy as many as 80 cars and put them in your garage.
You can personalise your cars by taking them in to the paint shop. Here, you'll be able to add a race number, change the colour of the seats and dashboard, and also the exterior colour. You can have any colour in the world that you wish.
Also in the garage, you have the options with car set-ups. You can buy your upgrades, sell your old stuff, fit the new stuff etc etc. In the later races in teh odern era, I recommend cahnging your car settings around quite a lot. By the time you get here, you'll have learnt quite a lot about how the cars respond to certain things (weather and your driving style). to keep on winning you'll have to get things just right, because however much you upgrade your cars, there'll always be better computer drivers out there.
With all the cars being products of Porche, you'd have thought that the game would become a bit boring looking at the same cars all the time. It doesn't though and with more than 80 available for racing, of all different shapes and sizes, its kind of educational too, showing the evolution of Porche in the last 50 years.
Advantages: The best driving game, ever Disadvantages: Still not perfect
Need For Speed: Porsche 2000 (Or Porsche Unleashed depending on whereabouts in the world you live) is the fifth game in the series of games that drives us petrol heads wild. This time round though, Electronic Arts went for something a bit different – something that put me off the game for ages. Rather than take a bunch of random cars and random tracks, group the cars according ability and the tracks according to difficulty, chucking a few different ... ...I did, as the fifth Need for Speed is also the best.
* Graphics *
The only complaint I had about the graphics in Need for Speed 4 (High Stakes or Road Challenge, again depending on whereabouts you live) was that the cars look very showroomy. Everything gleamed so much you could see the track reflecting in the cars! Oh, that and the headlights only appeared to be on when you were looking directly at them. These are all sorted out in Need for Speed ...

Advantages: Excellent Graphics, Very Addictive. Disadvantages: None as of yet.
...i have loved all the Need for Speed games since the original one was released all them years ago, back then i had a playstation, and i used to link up with my friend to play need for speed, it was one of the best games i had played. until now.
This game is totally superb, from the first menu, up until the end cradits, you will be hooked, driving through country roads, or taking to the city in a porsche speeding through shorcuts, damaging your car ... ...steady (yes cos that happens dont it LOL). This game is for everyone who likes to drive, you have the longetivity, of starting in the 60's and going through the decades as a Driver, from the early porsche's all the way to the porsche 2000, you will be able to collect them as you go along, seeing if you can win a Porsche Spider after you have completed a decade, from the vintage to the modern day, they are all included, and you have the chance to ...

Advantages: Adrenalin packed racing, Flawless graphics, huge ammount to play through Disadvantages: needs quite a high spec system, Can be a little repetitive
...at the end. So you need to have some money before you enter so you can afford repairs. Fortunately the returns are normally higher for the added risk. As you complete each tournament, time passes and newer models become available to buy in the show room while the classics on the second hand market become more valuable as time passes. This means that racing classic cars in the Golden era becomes quite an expensive passtime when you have to make repairs. ... ...during a race, as you need every bit of concentration for the task in hand. A do not disturb sign comes in handy here. Just in case you need any more convincing, check the price. At just £5.99 from HMV, can you really afford not to get it? I will also add that there is a Need for speed website, I havew now got the URL. It is: www.needforspeed.com There is a new car to download every month the site promises and there is a link to Porsche's website ...

Advantages: Great game, Incredibly realistic, has great longevity, different modes of play...Best PC racing Game EVER Disadvantages: Need a powerful PC!!!
...The only problem is you need a pretty powerful processor and graphics card (mine runs smoothly on 1000Mhz & 128 bit RAge Pro Graphics card).
Once you begin to play, it is easy to appreciate how beautifully crafted this game is. The controls are very simple, but it takes a while to get to grips with the game. The beauty of it is, it handles and behaves like a real car (including damage!!) There are also small touches like lights and open tops that ... ...are great. There is a ‘Factory’ in which you are a test driver and you carry out various tasks with your driving dexterity. There is an ‘Evolution Mode’ where you do tournaments with all the Porsche cars through the ages, and this is how you unlock new tracks and cars, like the ultimate racing vehicle, the 911 GT1. You can also do single races and multiplayer races provided you have an Internet connection.
This game is BEAUTIFUL. ...
