I bought this game at a kids' store in New York for about $40.
Last Christmas, I bought Need for Speed: Most Wanted Black Edition for the PC, and I must admit that while this game (Carbon) is thoroughly enjoyable, it felt extremely similar to the previous game (Most Wanted).
Sure, the cars are more or less the same, the body kits look fairly the same (with minor modifications), the rims are the same, the options for paint are somewhat limited and the overall map of the city is virtually identical to the one from Most Wanted.
However, in terms of the gameplay, this game does have its very strong points.
For one thing, there is a story line - predictable, but a story to follow, nevertheless.
Also, unlike Most Wanted 5.1.0 for the PSP, there is a "Free Roam" option, where you can just choose a car and drive all over the city, without any limits and restricted areas. The police chases are very addictive, since you can find yourself trying to evade police cars for almost 30 minutes at a time, if you are not focused on the time.
Voice acting in the game is very good, with some 1-dimensional characters (that is, typical thugs with heavy gangster-style speech) and the helpful but dumb sidekicks. The police band radio during the car chases is superbly well-done and you can use this feature to determine where they are trying to pull you over or where they are, to plan your getaway route.
There are 3 modes of play: Own the City, Quick Race and Multiplayer.
Own the City is more or less the "Career" mode, but with a difference - you are the head of a "crew" and different crews control different parts of the city (aka, their "turf") and using your crew, you have to defeat each crew to take control of each turf, until you control the entire city.
So, when you start "Own the City" mode, you choose your crew's name and a logo or insignia, and any time you race, choose a car or recruit a new crew member, that logo is there.
However, unlike prevous games, where you drive your own car, you have a crew, and when you race, you have 2 "wingmen" driving behind you during certain races. These wingmen can help you out in the race by several ways, such as by driving in front of you, so you can sit in his draft stream to build up speed, or by driving into an opponent's car to disable it or by driving in front of an opponent's car and leaving a spike strip to blow out the car's tyres. Of course, these moves only work when the opponents are in front of you and are still visible - if they are too far off, don't bother - your wingman will just flash his headlights in your rearview mirror to indicate that he cannot do what you want him to do.
There are several different types of races - circuit, sprint, circuit knockout (at the end of each lap, the last car is eliminated), team takedown - where the crews race against each other and try to take out the opponents' cars a certain number of times, package delivery - where you follow the "GPS" to a certain point to get there before everyone else, escape race - where you have a certain time to get out of an opposing crew's turf to a safe zone within a certain time limit.
Quick Race has 2 basic choices - one is with a random car wuith random modifications on a random track. This can sometimes be useful, if you want to try a car which you have not unlocked yet in the previous mode. Of course, because the cars and tracks are chosen at random, you have to try several times before you can get to try the car and track you want. In quick race mode, you have circuit races and sprint races (point a to point b as fast as possible).
Multiplayer can be done either online through the "Infrastructure Mode" or PSP to PSP via the "Ad Hoc" mode. I haven't had a chance to try the online mode, but I suspect it is no different from the Ad Hoc mode, since the EA screen comes up in both modes. Multiplayer via Ad Hoc mode supports up to 4 players, but each player must have his own PSP and a copy of the game. Gameplay via Ad Hoc mode is fast, simple to set up and can run as long as the batteries will last.
Unlike some other games, the open world of the game is very elaborate - buildings, bridges, all the cars on the roads, various landmarks, the hills, the landscaping are all richly detailed and there are no restrictions as to where you can drive - you can roam everywhere, as long as a car can get there.
Graphics rendering was almost flawless, but this is a portable gaming system, so do not expect everything to be HDTV quality. However, there were times when the body kits on the Nissan Skyline looked very "blocky" and pixelated. But, I suspect this to be a matter of resuing the same graphics rendering engine from the previous game, since most of the cars look the same. Scenery is flawless. Artwork for the load screens may take some getting used to, but this game was very well put together.
In terms of content, almost everything is new, with the exception of the map of the city and some of the car modifications.
However, if you prefer to race rather than modify and tweak your car, then this is the game for you.

Review of Need for Speed: Carbon - Own the City (PSP)
Advantages: good selection of cars, pretty good handling Disadvantages: a little lag at fast speeds
Unlike some of the other versions of NFS, this game revolves around a main storyline where, during a street race, you and your brother (Mick) are competing in a race, before something goes wrong, leaving you in hospital with a total loss of memory, and your brother dead. You take control six months later, back on your feet, determined to find what exactly happened in the accident, and who was responsible for the death of your brother. You start to ... ...city, winning respect, and also gaining new people to your crew - which can be used as wingmen.
Wingman can be used in some of your events to give you an advantage over the other cars at winning, coming in the form of Brawlers (can knock opposing cars out for a few seconds), Assassins (can lay down spikes on the road to slow opposing cars down) and Drafters (can race ahead giving you a slipstream, hence making you faster). My two preferred Wingman ...

Advantages: online mode, easy controls, fast loading times Disadvantages: disconnects in online mode, graphics and cut scenes aren't the best
...because i had never played need for speed games, I wanted to try one out.
The game starts of with a short movie, howeve the only downside to them, are that they are just graphitti styled pictures in a slideshow to make a movi with a voice over. There is a wide selection of cars in game which you unlock over time. This derives from the main aim of the game, which is to literaly own the city. You compete in street races acroos the different areas ... ...amount of races in one area, you move on to the next and when you do you unlock new cars and parts for the cars. At some points in the game, more cut scenes are shown, and as you own the city, you slowly find out more information to finally discover who killed your brother, which is what the cut scenes are all about. The handling varies on differnet cars which makes it quite realistic and allthough the graphics aren't the best they are very good ...

Advantages: Excellent fun and easy to play Disadvantages: handling is to stiff
...For Speed' series. Right from need for speed 'Hot Pursuit up to this latest edition.
Primarily you were never able to properly tune your cars and aplly bigger wheels and lucrative paint jobs, but the last three NFS games have allowed you to do so. NFS Carbon however in my opinion is not really up to scratch. The body kits are a bit basic and quit frankly there are just not that many to choose from.
The paint jobs all look the same and the wheels ... ...have fallen behind and you need to get back infront quick! You press the magic button and a teamate bails you out with a handfull of Slipstream enabeling you to regain your lead. If there is a racer infront that wont let you buy you can press that magic button again and activate the 'BRAWLER'. Brawler is a team mate that will save the day buy driving along side the person infront and disabeling his ride by slamming it into a wall. Nice freind hey. ...

Advantages: Great Online Multiplayer, Very Addictive Game Disadvantages: Average Visuals, No Proper Cutscene Like Console Version
Need for speed is a very fun and addictive game. The only problem with the game is that some of the races and get repetative and the visuals of the cars are not top notch. This game has a totally different storyline and lacks in the cgi style cut-scenes seen in the console games. The cutscenes for this game are more of a comic book style approach. Playing this game online is a lot of fun even playin the game localy with friends, comparing cars and ...
