Not disimilar to the tamagochis which were around in the 1990s Neopets (www.neopets.com) is an online world where children (and plenty of adults) can create their own virtual pet, work through challenges and quests, play games and even run a virtual business. The site runs quickly, navigation is fairly simple and self explanatory and the 2D graphics are good. There is not a huge amount of interaction with other players of Neopets such as you have in games like Habbo Hotel and Sissyfight, but if your children want then own Neopet then this is ideal as it allows them to play in a safe environment - for adults a mailbox is available on the site through which you can contact other members.
Create a Neopet - When you first enter the site you will be asked to create your neopet. There are many species of pets to choose, and if at a later date you decide that you would like your pet to be a different colour you can always buy a paintbrush and have this rectified. Your pet will have physical properties such as speed, skills and learning, though as you work through Neopia these can be upgraded. You can even educate your Neopet by buying it books to read. Once you have got the hang of the site you can create additional pets, or even adopt pets which have been abandoned at the Neopian pound, or you can even purchase pets for your pets - petpets. You do need to keep an eye on your neopet and feed it every few days, otherwise they get ill and unhappy.
Neopoints - Like the real world Neopia is run by money. In order to buy anything you need neopoints and the more Neopoints you have, the higher your status in Neopia. Neopoints can be earned in many ways, by playing games, trading goods or completing quests.
Games - There are many flash games on the site (you need to download a flash player but this free), varying in difficulty, and including Neopian versions of old favourites such as 'snake' and 'pairs'. For playing the games you are awarded neopoints - the higher your score, the more neopoints you earn, and more to the point, playing the games and the wide variety on offer is probably one of the biggest plus points of this site. Games can be accessed by the 'games' tab, or by clicking on them when exploring Neopia.
Neopia - Neopia is made up of a number of different worlds/lands. Click on Explore to see a map, and then click on the world you would like to take a closer look at. Within each world there are shops where you can buy things, houses of other Neopians (yes, with your Neopoints you can actually afford to get a foot on the property ladder) games and quests.
Shops - There are shops throughout the site which are run by Neopets. These sell a variety of objects ranging from food and drink to purple nailpolish. There is also a large marketplace where players can set up their own shop and buy and sell goods at a profit - a good introduction to the world of business for kids.
All in all this is a very comprehensive site, though in my opinion it will still appeal far more to children than adults (though I know an awful lot of adults do play this game). For children it does give them the responsibility of looking after their own pet (and it doesn't really matter too much if they kill it) and teaches them how to save money and turn a profit (all be it on pretend goods - again the advantage is that noone can actually go bankrupt). Kids also do not have as much freedom as adults to interact with other players which makes it a safe environment for them to operate in, and best of all, as long as you have an internet connection Neopets is completely free and there are no popups or adverts on the site.
For adults, the lack of human interaction on the site makes it slightly less appealing that other multiplayer games, and you may find you tire of feeding a small cartoon dinosaur every couple of days to stop it getting hungry. On the other hand I may be wrong and you may get addicted too...
Advantages: interactive and addictive fun Disadvantages: limiting, can become boring
I was introduced to Neopets.com by a friend and after only a couple of days finding my way around was hooked.
It's a game centered around your adoptive pet or pets as each player can adopt up to 4 pets. The site is easy to navigate, it's online and so is interactive with other 'humans' and it provides the ability of allowing you to improve your web creativity using the HTML format, which was the main interest for me.
The following are just a few ... ...as it is continuously being updated, improved and made more user-friendly with less errors and server down-times when much needed maintenance is carried out:
Your own virtual shop, main shops, games, range of on-line merchandise, web camera to view the staff at Neopets, Neomail, various good links to other sites and sponsors and a whole load more besides.
Although your pets can battle it out in the new Battledome I'm not sure there is a set aim ...

Advantages: Great fun for all of the family. Helps children understand the concept of running a business and having responsibilities. Disadvantages: The site sometimes runs slowly because of all of the people who use it.
...at home, then log onto neopets.com and show your children that they can have a virtual pet for free. This pet can be fed and played with, but as your child grows, the list of possibilties Neopets brings grows and grows. The site becomes a safe place for pet owners to share their experiences. You can buy a virtual shop where other neopet owners can purchase items of every kind you could think of and more from you. To make things more lifelike, there ... ...can save up and keep in a bank. The more money you earn through your shop, the more you can use to do ther things, such as building your own property.
Yes, you read right. You can actually build a virtual house for your pet to stay in. To be honest, I have not actually explored this facility to the max as I have not got a very good eye for a bargain, but members of my family who are more experienced in finances have built a home - a great way to ...

Advantages: Very well designed, laid out, fast, easy to use... Disadvantages: Piracy is easy
Neopets was founded in 1996 by a few men that had nothing better to do. Basically, you have a virtual pet that lives in some fictious land called 'Neopia' - original or what - and you have to buy food, clothes, toothpaste and other pointless items with you NeoPoints. You can earn more NeoPoints - NP - by setting up your own shop and selling your things, and also playing on the stock market.
But, what it the point of this site? It entertains, sure, ... ...any money? It's a great idea, but surely NeoPets is running at a loss?
I confess, I do have an account, and it's fun to an extent, but I've seen people who play it 24-7. The problem is, building a NeoHome seems to be more interesting than playing football or living their life these days.
Anyway, more about the site...
For about ten minutes a day, you can actually have a little fun on NeoPets - check your shop and see if you've made any profits, ...

Advantages: Great fun no matter what your age ! Disadvantages: addiction to neopets.com
The website is : www.neopets.com , and I came across it when I was in college, the student common room was being used for mock exams, and I, like the other students had nothing to do. I came across neopets in the IT room, and couldn't leave the computer ! ( many of us became hooked)
It has many parts to it, but basically you register for free and choose a 'pet' of your choice out of the many varieties available and choose their colour. You are then ... ...the pet and keep it happy by playing any of the 140+ games, some involve luck for example the slot games or black jack, or action games, competions, and a feature game which can earn you more points than usual. Playing the games could become tedious, however . . . cleverly it is designed so that you earn points; the 'neopian currency' which you can invest in the stock market, open a bank account with and collect interest, buy a home, open a shop,go ...
