AG Neovo F419 TFT Monitor
Following a recent furniture reshuffle at home, I found myself without the space to accommodate my beloved 19” traditional CRT monitor. I loved it's massive screen real estate, vibrant colours and crisp display. Needless to say, I was not looking forward to an enforced change to a TFT flat panel display – after all who wants to spend money replacing working components? However, biting the bullet, I started to look around for a replacement...and quickly identified the AG Neovo F419.
The F419 is an attractive looking, 19” diagonal flat panel monitor. It comes equipped with both analogue and digital video inputs and a native resolution of 1280 x 1024 pixels. With a wide 170 degree viewing angle and 700:1 contrast ratio coupled with decent specifications for brightness (300 cd/s) and response time (15ms/10ms) I had high hopes of it successfully replacing my (increasingly old fashioned looking) traditional beige CRT monster. I read a few customer reviews, took a deep breath and pressed the 'order' button.
When the product arrived, the first thing that struck me was how small and light the box was. No more risked hernias moving this screen around! The hardest part of installing this monitor was removing the old one...what difference in weight. However, once I had reclaimed my deskspace setting up the AG was as simple as connecting the power and video leads and turning the PC on. Windows XP recognised the monitor on boot-up and that was all there was to it! No need to use either the CD-ROM or the manual that accompanied the F419 – getting up and running was a matter of a few painless minutes. All PC equipment should be this simple to install.
The display I was greeted with was, well, beautiful. Clear, bright colours and crisp text and graphics definitely blew my previous monitor's display quality into the weeds. This I was not expecting! My collection of digital photographs looked better than ever and working with office and internet applications was easier than ever, thanks to the sheer quality of this display. I didn't need to touch the monitor settings, it was great just out of the box. Subjectively, it seems kinder to the eyes than a traditional CRT monitor, too.
OK, I thought – let's see how easy it is to set up with a different operating system. So I fired up my Linux partition and the Fedora Core 2 distribution installed on it had as little trouble identifying the F419 as Windows XP had. Excellent.
Switching back to Windows, I then decided to throw a few 3D applications at the screen. An oft quoted shortcoming of TFT screens is that their relatively slow response times in relation to CRT monitors can result in smeared images (called 'ghosting') when handling fast moving graphics such as those typically encountered in 3D games or during DVD movie playback. The F419 continued to impress, I saw no visible smearing while playing several high framerate 3D games and running the graphics benchmark suite, 3D2001SE.
So far so good. Surely it can't all be good news? Well, no. There are a couple of minor drawbacks. Firstly, the monitor stand is not the easiest to adjust – AG should work on this. In practice, the stand positions the screen very naturally for a desk based working position so it's not actually been a problem for me – but I do think adjustment should be made easier. Secondly, there is the question of 'dead pixels'. This are pixels (or points) on the display that are 'stuck'. These manifest themselves as tiny dots on the screen that are, for example, always white in colour, not changing with the display as they should. Current manufacturing techniques and yields make it virtually impossible to produce TFT screens of any size that are guaranteed to be free of dead pixels. Policies vary from brand to brand, but in general terms, the major manufacturers will not regard a screen such as the AG Neovo F419 as defective unless it has more then 5 dead pixels. This is a strange concept to get used to when one moves over from the world of CRT monitors. I read a number of customer reviews of the F419 before purchasing and many of them stated that their screen had zero dead pixels (and this was a big factor in my buying decision). My display, how, has one towards the lower left of the display. It's rarely visible but if there were 5 dead pixels on my monitor I might feel a little more irritation at the fact.
Any other points of note? Well, the 3 year warranty for one – it's good to see a manufacturer standing behind their product. A monitor like this is a sizeable purchase, after all. For those that are interested, there is an optional wall mounting kit available. In addition to the reduced weight, TFT screens consume noticeably less power than their CRT counterparts. The F419 is available in black or ivory.
So, on balance how do I feel about my new monitor? Well, I love it. It has a great, responsive display, takes up very little room on my desk and is simplicity itself to move around, should the need arise. It is backed by a strong warranty and isn't burdened by 'features' such as the cheap and nasty speakers that accompany some screens of this type – in my opinion they simply bump up both the cost and the size of the monitor. The F419 looks stylish, on or off, and required very little setup with either of the operating systems that I use. It is currently available in the UK for less than £375 (inc. VAT) and represents great value for a 19” TFT. With qualities like these, I can even forgive the single dead pixel I have.
Well, there's no going back – I'm convinced of the merits of TFT screens and of the AG Neovo F419 in particular.
Advantages: DVI and VGA Input, Looks, Size Disadvantages: None
This monitor feels truly huge after using a 17" CRT for several years. At less than £200, the quality of this monitor has truly astounded me. When it was delivered it had no dead pixels (it still has none) and was very simple to setup. Just click it in the stand and plug it in and away you go. The CD provided is not necessary, it contains the colour profiles for Windows and Mac (though for a Mac its not necessary as my iBook had the profile built ... ...a 'natural' resolution of 1280x1024, contrast ratio of 500:1, 16.7 million colours (24-bit) , and a response time of 12ms.
The physical dimensions of this monitor are excellent with a footprint of 16.6 by 8.7 inches. This leaves a lot of desk space after using a 17" CRT! It weighs very little compared to the CRT monitor that I replaced and the packaging in the box is excellent, with a carrying handle, so making the trip up the stairs extremely easy!

Advantages: Fits anywhere, great screen size Disadvantages: ?
I never knew how good my games could look until we got the F-419 its great.
I can see why the graphics card cost so much now, its wonderful. The screen makes editing photos and playing games much more pleasurable.
We loved the 19" screen so much we now have one on all 3 PCs and even got them for other family members.
Unless you can afford LCD this is the best screen around. We wanted to get rid of the bulky screens we had and this is much better. ...

Advantages: Extremely good value for money, DVI input, lighweight, looks and quality Disadvantages: Usual TFT disadvantaes against CRTs (refresh rate etc)
This monitor was my first step into the TFT World. Being a University student I have little money for new things and this was my first big buy for a while. My original problem was that I gained a new PC desk from a friend and my 17inch CRT just wouldn't fit in it as it was one of those enclosed types. So I began my search for my first ever TFT, thinking I would have to skimp on performance, image size or quality. However, within a couple of days ... ...under £200 it was perfect!
Ordering was not a problem and the monitor arrived within just a couple of days. Setup was easier than I imagined and my old mointor was thrown into the skip. I didn't realy need to use the disk that came with it but I did anyway just to let Windows have a break and the monitor was installed and instantly recognised and set itself up with my 6600GT.
Let the testing begin!
Being quite a big games fan I was worried that ...

Advantages: Good quality and great value Disadvantages: Warranty has hidden downfalls
...I bought my AG Neovo F419 in 2005, and had just under a year of good quality use - but then the backlight died and I called up AG Neovo Warranty in the UK, and then said that it is a swap-out warranty - you basically exchange your faulty one for a new one - or so I though, I'm on my third exchange, and I'm not impressed. My first monitor was great, not a single dead pixel, but only lasted a year, the first replacement had one bright red dead pixel ... ...I called up and they exchanged that one - for one that had a large grey band on the screen (plus something rattled inside).
I complained yet again stating I bought a BRAND NEW model, why should I keep getting refurbished models (you can tell by the date on the back). I got another refurbished one today (although they promised me a NEW one!), and this is missing all the cables, manual and driver CD!
The monitor itself is cracking, but be very wary ...

An outstanding monitor.
I've been using one of these for about a year, and I can't think of one reason to complain. It is easy to install, looks great, and performs faultlessly. The 12ms response is quick enough to ensure ghosting never happens, even on the fastest games or DVD scenes - I've tested mine thoroughly.
The picture is crisp and clear and colours are vibrant and excellent representations of the real thing (based on prints of photos). ... ...with other LCD screens. I have my resolution set to 1280x1024, and even the smallest text is easy to read and well defined.
Bought when it was £200, you'd be daft not to get one now, I can't recommend it highly enough. You can find them for around £140 at the moment (Sept '06). ...
