Nerf N-Strike Elite HyperFire

First impressions

When it comes to fun in the sun we don’t really get a great deal of time for this in the UK. It seems that as soon as we have the first warm day of the year we are all saying summer has arrived, but it never seems to last, and before we know it we are in the winter months. Finding toys to play with outdoors can be tough, and due to the English weather we have to take into account that it could be best looking for toys that are also suitable for indoor use also. I wouldn’t recommend all Nerf guns for indoor use, but their range of ‘airsoft’ guns are worth considering.

What we have here is called the N-Strike Elite Hyperfire Blaster. This is a rapid fire gun that fires soft projectiles, and the bright blue and orange colour scheme really makes this one stand out. You can see the ‘Hyperfire Elite’ branding on the side of the gun, and Nerf is a brand not shy to make their products stand out. Some of their guns are more muted, but the vast majority are eye-catching and made to stand out.

My experience

Kids love playing with these sorts of things, though I could understand an adult not wanting their child to have a gun in their hands. Obviously no real harm is going to be done to other children, and you could just look at this as a dry water fight! At least when we have cold summers days your child won’t be shivering!

The Hyperfire comes with a 25-dart drum. This rapid-fire gun allows you to fire 5 shots per second at your opponent, so the life of the drum is obviously short before it requires refilling! That said, 25 darts is a pretty impressive capacity. The blue darts are made from foam, and are not going to hurt much more than a fly when they are fired.

With an impressive range of up to 27 metres this is a powerful piece of kit. The trigger is easy to pull, and with an 8-16 year age guide this is a gun that is going to have a wide appeal. The gun actually required 4 ‘D’ batteries. These are the large batteries, and this is a cost worth considering when buying this particular gun.

In terms of the performance this is a very capable piece of kit. It has given much enjoyment to the teenagers that have used it, and we have only lost a couple of the darts so far, which I think is rather good! These can be bought online if you require replacements, though this is something you may resent when you have already had to stump up for the cost of the product and the batteries to go with it.

Price and availability

This Nerf gun is available from a range of online and highstreet retailers. Tesco have it for sale for £50, though more competitively priced are Toys ‘R Us that are asking £39.99 both online and instore. If you don’t’ mind buying one in used condition then you may be in for a shock, with them reaching up to £30. It could be worth just shopping around online and picking one up for £40.

Final thoughts

This is a really fun gun for the teenager, and it is just the right size for someone in their early teens. It isn’t a compact size, but it fits across the chest nicely, and the rapid fire adds to the enjoyment and excitement. The Nerf brand is one to look out for when buying anything like this, and we have found their products to be both safe and of a good quality, so they are going to last. The price is obviously a consideration, and I would therefore understand someone wanting to go to their local supermarket and buy very cheap alternatives, though these may just last you the one summer or even a few months at the most.
