For someone who usually takes their coffee black, I'm surprisingly fond of a decent cappuccino. Indeed, if I'm ever in a coffee shop, I'll always choose that over an Americano and in New York last year, I drank nothing but cappuccinos for three days.
But a cappuccino has always been a "special" drink for me. The kind of drink that you only have if you're out somewhere. As an accompaniment to an Italian meal, or something to sit in a cafe drinking, ideally on a summer's day, and ideally while reading a good book. It's best with an intellectual kind of pursuit.
The problem is, and always has been, that it's tough to drink a cappuccino at home without fancy cappuccino making equipment. You can't have a decent home made cappuccino with just a kettle and hot water, as instant cappuccinos just aren't up to scratch. But when Nescafe had an offer on recently where you could get 5 cappuccino sachets free with a 300g jar of Nescafe, I thought I'd give it another try. After all, the picture on the box looked like a fairly decent cappuccino and, if they didn't turn out to be any good, the price was right!
The sachets are quite a decent size, although this isn't really a surprise, given that a cappuccino would normally be served in a larger cup than a normal coffee. With the combination of coffee and whitener (and sugar in the standard sweetened version), you get roughly the equivalent to two teaspoons of powder.
Tearing open the sachet, anyone expecting to be able to savour the rich aroma of coffee as you can even on opening a jar of instant, is going to be sorely disappointed. There's not much of a smell, and what there is seems to have an almost vanilla-like edge to it. I suspect this is the whitener. The same is true once the water has been added - if you didn't know that what you'd made contained coffee, you'd never guess.
This is where the problems that make the perfect instant cappuccino difficult to find really start. The top of a cappuccino is usually white and fluffy because the milk used has been steamed and whipped. In an instant cappuccino, you're not even starting with proper milk, and the best you can do is to stir vigorously. And what you get on the top of your coffee is a fairly solid looking froth. Sure, there's a few bubbles in it, but it doesn't even look close to the appearance of the steamed milk topping of a cappuccino - it's beige rather than white, for a start!
Of course, for a consumable, the most important thing is the taste test. And here, Nescafe Cappuccino fails again. The froth is quite heavy, and has a slightly powdery taste to it, no matter how much you've stirred the drink beforehand. Once you're through that, what you have is a cup of white coffee. The froth attaches itself to the side of the mug quite quickly and with that gone, there's no difference between this and a normal coffee with milk, apart from the powdery aftertaste from the froth, which seems to hang around long afterwards,
The other gripe would be with the sweetener. You can ask a lot of different people how they take their coffee, and get a lot of different answers. Even those of us who take sugar will take different amounts. So, in adding sweetener to try and appeal to more people, a lot are going to be unhappy. It's just about right for someone like me, who would take one sugar in a black coffee normally, but if you take more sugar than that, you'll be adding more. Fortunately, Nescafe have thought of people who don't have a sweet tooth and there's an unsweetened version to cater for you.
Of course, there is also the disadvantage of this not being a good product for the ethical shopper. It's a Nescafe coffee, which means it's made by Nestle. Having just found a conscience myself, this is likely to be the last time I drink Nescafe and it's almost enough to make me want to boycott the brand for quality reasons, not just for the unethical practices they've used.
If you like a good cappuccino, you're really not going to be a fan of this. I'm tempted to report Nescafe for false advertising, as this is really nothing like what I would normally expect if I ordered a cappuccino. If you like slightly sweetened white coffee, you might be OK with it, once you've got through the froth.
It's available in both sweetened and unsweetened versions and both caffeinated and decaff. 10 sachets will cost £1.77 from Tesco, or £1.88 from Sainsbury's, although there is a 2 for £3.00 offer at Tesco at the time of writing. It's worth noting that both supermarkets have an own brand instant cappuccino at £1.27 and £1.29 respectively for 10 sachets. As they can't really be any worse than this, if you're determined to try, you might as well try one of those and save yourself some money. Personally, it's not a course of action I can recommend.
Advantages: Cappuccino at home Disadvantages: May upset some coffee lovers
...my coffee cravings I buy Nescafe Cappuccino sachets. They are really handy because you don’t have to add milk to them. This is a lifesaver at work, because most of the time someone forgets to buy the milk, so ordinary coffee and tea is out of the question. I have a store of Nescafe Cappuccino (now NC for short) in my desk drawer, and they are a great life saver in the mornings allowing me to stay wide awake without falling asleep amongst a pile of ... ...all very soon. Nescafe have cottoned on to the fact that café society/culture is big business, and have cashed in with an assortment of café style coffees. Other varieties include: Vanilla, Latte, Hazelnut, Mocha and Caramel flavours. I can vouch for the Mocha but haven’t tried any of the other coffees. Each sachet contains 16g of coffee and milk powder, and the new packaging boasts that it is now mug size with even better froth. Nescafe are currently ...

...and then two sachets of Nescafe Cappuccino. The Options and Cadbury’s Instant Break were 50p for two, the Cappuccino was 53p. The instructions are easy. You boil the water, let it cool, put the powder in the cup and add the hot water while stirring. It looked pretty good, with a nice creamy froth on top and lots of bubbles. My sore throat needed soothing, so I took a long slurp. At first, you just seem to get a mouthful of froth, but the coffee ... ...drink.
Each sachet of Nescafe Cappuccino is 53 calories, which I don't think is too bad, but it might be too high if you are on a strict diet. The drink is readily available and can be bought in boxes of ten sachets as well as the pairs. I was impressed overall. I’m not a huge coffee fan, but this was nice and helped to soothe my throat, as well as making a change from my usual tipple. It won’t convert me from my ten-a-day tea habit ...

Advantages: cheaper than going out for a cappuccino, instant cappuccino Disadvantages: mediocre taste
Life in Schloß Morgenhund isn’t all smoked salmon, fresh bagels delivered daily, English Rose tea, filter coffee and an espresso machine - occasionally I have to slum it too. When I am particularly busy the kettle gets used a lot - not for coffee as I still find it just as easy to load up the coffee machine, but when I haven’t got time to go out for a Cappuccino in one of the nearby Kaffeehäuser I have to make do with Nestlé cappuccino. Incidentally, ... ...called a Melange, with a Viennese cappuccino being served with cream... But I digress.
Generally instant cappuccino is a bit of a disappointment, with the espresso-like crema (technical term for the “froth”) often being like a sludge, and the coffee really very weak and washed out – and milky, but then again the overriding majority of the mixture you chuck in is actually a milk powder colour, so that is probably to be expected. Serving suggestions ...

...So when I saw Nescafe cappuccino sachets in my local spar on the way to work one day, I thought I’d buy one for a mid-morning treat. I have had these ones before, and they tasted ok when I had them then, so perhaps the ones I bought this time were from a bad batch…

Another thing that disappointed me with the Nescafe version is that the Tesco’s ones include a dinky sachet of chocolate for you to sprinkle on the top, shame you cannot do it with the Nescafe ones as this would probably improve the taste slightly too.
The advantages of having a product like this is that you can easily carry a sachet around, it is easy to make providing you don’t use freshly boiled water and ...

Now you all know me ( well most of you do ) and you all know that I am a self confessed coffee addict. I will praise good coffee and slag bad coffee off so badly I could probably be sued for libel, or slander ( which ever is the written one !! ).
Thus far I have written ops on other Nestlé coffee products namely Nescafe, NescafeCappuccino and NescafeCoffee in a Can to name a few. While the Cappuccino sachets and the cr*p in a can got rather bad reviews from me I did give the thumbs up to normal Nescafe so I though why not even the score and write about not just another Nestlé product but a Nestlé coffee related product.
Thankfully Ciao! placed the Cat in the listings for me quickly enough, enabling me to write this op. So a quick thanks to Ciao! for not moving at a snails pace for a change !!
Now I don?t know about you ...
Advantages: Quick and simple to make Disadvantages: Not so frothy
I don't drink a lot of coffee, I am more for tea but I like the occasional latte when in town or on holiday. I find normal coffee and cappuccino to be too strong for me. While I was in the tea and coffee isle I noticed that Nescafe had a good range of instant continental coffee's. I decided that it would make a nice change to have something available for the odd moment when I fancy a cup or for the occasional visitor.
The Package.
It is a bit larger than say a box of 80 tea bags. Predominantly blue with the Nescafe logo on the left side and the name Latte in white on red square at top. There is a picture of a milky coffee almost spilling out of a mug. Now even more milkier new mug size is displayed on the froth. It has 8 servings. On the back are pictures of the different styles of coffee. On one side are the simple mixing ...

Advantages: Strong and wakes you up Disadvantages: Relatively expensive
I?d never tried an Espresso before I tried this. I suppose I was a bit scared of the ?short and very strong? type flavours that surrounds the coffee. I?m someone who likes a creamy coffee, with quite a bit of milk, and I?m a sucker for a cappuccino. But after giving Nescafe Espresso a go, I was pleasantly surprised and will probably be drinking a lot more of Espressos from now on!
Nescafe host a wide range of different coffee?s, from their Original to coffees such as Costa Rican and others. Espresso is just one of their ?Black Jar? range. The coffee in the black jars are the ?better? coffee?s. or another way to put it, the more specialist coffees which are drunk less than the normal instant coffees.
So what?s it like? Well as any coffee lover will tell you, all coffees taste different. I was expecting a watery black coffee, but ...
