I am not a health professional and have often had to seek advice from the team of caring staff that we are lucky enough to have in and around our area. My elderly Mum was hospitalised a couple of times last year and it was at that point we decided that it was far easier for us to go and stay with her temporarily until she was back on her feet. I don't have a problem with making good nutritious food but sometimes no matter how I tried I couldn't come up with anything that she fancied eating. At first I wasn't too worried, Mum was drinking and although she was frail she remained in good spirits but after a day or so alarm bells started to ring.
I decided to make a telephone call to the local Doctors surgery and seek advice, the GP kindly sent the District Nurse out to visit and she was able to point me in the right direction. The District Nurse suggested that I try some Nestle Build-up, at that time I had heard of them but that was as much as I knew. The chemist stocked them in strawberry, vanilla, chocolate and banana flavour, I chose the strawberry flavour knowing that Mum enjoyed that fresh taste.
I fully understood that as much as Mum wanted to be able to enjoy some `real food` at that point in time she just wasn't able to cope with it. Nestle Build-Up was a good way forward, at least the fruity milk shakes were easy to drink and simple to digest and they made me feel secure in the knowledge that I was at least trying to help the situation along.
There are four separate sachets of Nestle Build-Up in each box and I paid somewhere in the region of £2.50 for the box at our local pharmacy. The milk shake is easy to make, just pour the contents of the sachet into a glass, measure out 200ml of cold milk into a jug and then add a small amount of the milk to the powder and make it into a soft paste then add the rest of the milk and stir the contents of the glass well until the milk shake is smooth. Nestle Build-Up smells much the same as the Nesquik milk shake but there are some obvious differences which will be explained in a while. The strawberry smell was appetising without smelling too sweet. Initially I only offered Mum a half a glass full, it was easy for her to drink and we replaced some of her hot drinks with the Nestle Build-Up. Thankfully the Build-Up milk shake acted as a stop gap for a couple of days and as Mum got over her stay in hospital her appetite started to creep back slowly. For a good few days we used Nestle Build-Up and started to slowly introduce tiny portions of her favourite foods as well, so her diet was being subsidised at all times.
Nestle Build-Up is rich in vitamins – C, D, B, E, B6, B1 (Thiamine), B2, (Riboflavin), B2, (Niacin), folic acid, a mineral mix containing Magnesium Hydroxide, Iron Orthophosphate's, Zinc Oxide and Potassium Iodide. Build-Up also contains Calcium, Glucose and Lactose.
One milk shake contains 263 calories and 14.9g of protein. Nestle Build-Up also contains at least 30% of the recommended daily intake of vitamins and minerals and it is considered to be a real food formulation. Nestle Build-Up mustn't be given to children under three years old, personally I would always ask either our own GP or Practise Nurse before trying out anything new anyway.
I now know that there is a range of savoury flavoured Build-Ups too, these are modelled on a cup a soup yet they are packed with the much needed vitamins and minerals that we all need. I blessed Nestle for providing something that helped to tide us through a difficult time, in the end we managed to get back to normal but I would always use the Nestle Build-Up milk shakes again.

This sounds very similar to Complan which you can either use hot or cold milk, think they do soups too. My aunt had them after she'd come out of hospital. Think she still has the odd one when she is feeling a bit low.

My daughter had something similar but it was prescribed by the Doctor. I didn't know Nestle did this though. Hope your mum is feeling a lot better now xx
