Broadband performance is delivered to the switch/modem and then delivers the resulting connection to the 4 computers connected.
This Switch has 4 `10/100` connections on it for connecting to a computer. This is the standard network connection that looks like a phone socket. Of course, you will need a separate network card for each computer which can be purchased for about £10 each. This allows the actual computer ... more
For a family to own a PC at home is almost second nature today. To own 2 or 3 different computers is nothing unusual. But powering all 3 with its own Modem and internet connection can prove costly and much congestion on the phone line. But now the answer to your problems is here. A router and modem all in one that can distribute internett access to all parts of the house from one box. The Netgear router. Ideal for both home and small office use, the Netgear ADSL modem router allows broadband speed internet access for up to 4 people.
OK, so what is it? Basically it is a switch that splits one Internet connection between 4 computers. Imagine The router to act like a glass of milk with 4 straws coming out of it. 4 people are sharing the same glass of milk. The same as 4 people are sharing one internet connection but each one is serviced by its own straw.
This allows the actual computer to be connected to the switch. Cabling also needs to be considered. To deliver the internet to each computer, sufficent cabling is required which can become expensive to buy. Making it yourself with the right cables is an alternative if you know what you are doing.
Size/Shape. Its about the length of a school ruler and about the height of a credit card. It has a depth of something a little bigger than a mobile phone. The little flashing lights on the front tell me when it is being accessed and when it is online.
How does it perform? Very well. It distributes an even and constant connection to the internet thanks to its inbuilt modem. This can replace an existing modem supplied by your broadband supplier. It also has some handy functions to protect some viewers of the internet. It has individual connection level settings. This can allow parents to filter out adult material to certain computers. It gives the parents just a little bit more security over what their children are looking at. There is also built in software to cover the firewall aspects. This is easy to install and configure.
Compatibility. It is compatible with most operating systems common to both home and office use. If you have any of the Windows releases ater Windows 95 (including XP and ME) you are covered. It also supports MAC,Unix and Linux.
Price. Online it comes for as little as £128 from Dabs. A worthwhile investment as most switches without a cable modem cost about the same. This means you will save on the outlay of a cable modem price. Excellent value.
Advantages: STYLISH AND EXTREMELY EASY TO SET UP! Disadvantages: COMES WITH RUBBISH DOWNLOAD SPEEDS!
After having purchased four previous netgear routers i am still impressed with the seemless effort in which netgear have made there configurations. I believe after extensive searches this is a very good price for this bit of kit, some may say i am crazy but i have ADSL and DSL in my home and using two different wireless routers have found no problems yet. WGR614 highly recommended for the user of cable broadband and wanting to go wireless or use ... ...THE PRODUCT: Signal strenth is very good! VERY SMALL! fits in a little chest of draws in my hall nicely LOOKS VERY STYLISH! BAD THINGS ABOUT THE PRODUCT: You get a TERRIBLE download speed with it! WHERE CAN YOU BUY IT FROM? You can buy it from shops like curry's and dixons Or you can buy it on the internet Amazon would be a good place. THE PRICE: Its about £65 Overall this is a really good piece of equipment its very easy to setup, but the download ...

The only disadvantage was the tiny little LAN cable provided, so you either have your computer near the phone line or nip down pc world for another longer one. ...

Advantages: Facilities, easy set up, lights(!), stability Disadvantages: Some backwards compatibility issues, lack of web executable filtering
The Netgear DG834PN is the latest version of the DG834 and combines an ADSLmodem with a wireless router and 4 port switch. In plain English, this plugs in your phone socket and allows one or more PCs to share the connection via either a wired or wireless link.
The modem part is ADSL2+ ready and should work with even the fastest ISP offerings out there which as at Dec 2006 are around 12mbps in the UK. The setup wizard worked flawlessly and apart from the username and password, worked everything else out for itself and had the DG834PN up and running in a couple of minutes.
As with most similar devices, further configuration is done via a web interface. The wireless section supports 802.11b and 802.11g as well as Netgear's own 802.11 Super G variant offering 108Mbps. The unit features 6 internal Antennas which constantly reconfigure ...
Advantages: Excellent range, eliminates wireless dead spots Disadvantages: Occasionally has problems 'locking' on to a signal
either in the office (the same room as the router) or the room beneath it, without having serious dropped connection issues.
**The Router**
As I was looking through the Netgear site one day, I saw an article about a new product they had just released, the DG834PN RangeMax Wireless Router, which made use of Smart MIMO (Multi-In, Multi-Out) technology (more of this later), that promised to deliver up to 10x faster coverage & speed compared to 802.11g, extend the network range by up to 400 feet and eliminate dead spots. It also boasted a speed of 108 Mbps.
The DG834PN allows you to directly connect up to 4 computers using Ethernet cables and allows up to 253 users to connect wirelessly - more than enough for most home networks I would think ... As it combines a router AND a modem, it can be plugged directly into an ADSL line.
It also ...
Advantages: multiple Ethernet ports Disadvantages: can become laggy after a long period of time
I believe that netgear is the leading company in wireless devices. i bought the DG834GT expecting good quality, and thats exactly what i got in return. the shape of the devices has been well thought out, its small and sleek, and is colored in a neutral color, so it wont clash with its surroundings. the device also has an incredibly endurance time, in my house hold we leave it running hrs a day 7 days a week, and the device doesn't really start playing up until about 2 weeks time, when the Internet just starts to become laggy or takes time for web pages to load, and all we do to correct the problem is unplug it for about an hour to let it cool down and then plug it in again, and it runs perfectly. Another advantage to the DG834GT is that it has multiple Ethernet ports at the rear of the device, these can be used for plugging in printers ...
