For a family to own a PC at home is almost second nature today. To own 2 or 3 different computers is nothing unusual. But powering all 3 with its own Modem and internet connection can prove costly and much congestion on the phone line. But now the answer to your problems is here. A router and modem all in one that can distribute internett access to all parts of the house from one box. The Netgear router. Ideal for both home and small office use, the Netgear ADSL modem router allows broadband speedinternet access for up to 4 people.
OK, so what is it? Basically it is a switch that splits one Internet connection between 4 computers. Imagine The router to act like a glass of milk with 4 straws coming out of it. 4 people are sharing the same glass of milk. The same as 4 people are sharing one internet connection but each one is serviced by its own straw. Broadband performance is delivered to the switch/modem and then delivers the resulting connection to the 4 computers connected.
This Switch has 4 `10/100` connections on it for connecting to a computer. This is the standard network connection that looks like a phone socket. Of course, you will need a separate network card for each computer which can be purchased for about £10 each. This allows the actual computer to be connected to the switch. Cabling also needs to be considered. To deliver the internet to each computer, sufficent cabling is required which can become expensive to buy. Making it yourself with the right cables is an alternative if you know what you are doing.
Size/Shape. Its about the length of a school ruler and about the height of a credit card. It has a depth of something a little bigger than a mobile phone. The little flashing lights on the front tell me when it is being accessed and when it is online.
How does it perform? Very well. It distributes an even and constant connection to the internet thanks to its inbuilt modem. This can replace an existing modem supplied by your broadband supplier. It also has some handy functions to protect some viewers of the internet. It has individual connection level settings. This can allow parents to filter out adult material to certain computers. It gives the parents just a little bit more security over what their children are looking at. There is also built in software to cover the firewall aspects. This is easy to install and configure.
Compatibility. It is compatible with most operating systems common to both home and office use. If you have any of the Windows releases ater Windows 95 (including XP and ME) you are covered. It also supports MAC,Unix and Linux.
Price. Online it comes for as little as £128 from Dabs. A worthwhile investment as most switches without a cable modem cost about the same. This means you will save on the outlay of a cable modem price. Excellent value.
