Advantages: free mains adaptor, cheap, top quality Disadvantages: none that spring to mind
...This is probably the best 4portHub i have found, Netgear are a top rated manufacturer up there with 3Com, Cisco and Intel, but they are suprisingly cheap! I have nocked up a network with a couple of Netgear cards and some from other manufacturers, it works perfectly with all of them.
Key features
*Includes mains adaptor (rather than relying on a 'keyboard wedge' adaptor with needs the pc its connected to to be switched on for the hub to work)
*also comes with screws to attach it to a wall of desk (good for stopping people nicking it!
*pretty small
*lots of flashing lights (!)
*can be linked to more hubs when your network grows
*lifetime warranty
*metal case (rock hard, can sit books on it!)
*doddle to set up...

Advantages: Funky glowing lights Disadvantages: Cheaper "clones" are available
...I bought the Targus Ultra Mini 4-Port USB Hub as I have more USB items than USB sockets on my laptop docking station.
Its compact dimensions (width 9.5 cm, depth 4 cm, height 1.5 cm, weight 40 g)and included USB connection cable allow it to fit anywhere on the desk, and its four USB 2.0 ports (480Mbps data transfer) allow rapid connection to all sorts of peripherals. It's also backward compatible with older USB 1.1 devices, and Apple devices I believe, too.
Installation (with Windows XP SP2) is a doddle, with no drivers aor anything to install, just plug it in, wait a few seconds while Windows does its stuff, and we're off. Connecting USB peripherals previously connected directly prompts Windows to repeat its "Found New Hardware" business, but this takes just a few seconds.
When peripherals are connected, the plastic around...

Advantages: Ebay bargain ! Disadvantages: Only 10 mbps, Only 4 ports
...Bought this on Ebay for a bargain £1 to expand my network. I've since replaced it with another 3Com hub (check out my other reviews), but thought I'd still let you know a little about it.
It's an entry-level, 4porthub, but only 10BASE-T, rather than the faster 100BASE-TX - that's why I upgraded, so you can connect 4 users together.
There's one (manually switched) MDI-MDIX port to provide simple "in" connection from a server, switch, or hub, and three other female RJ-45 ports to send the network signal out to 3 other items.
The hub has an external power supply and a "CoolCurve" self-cooling design eliminating the need for a noisy fan. Its dimensions (height: 3.6cm, width: 23.1cm, depth: 13.6cm) allow it to fit nicely with other 3Com OfficeConnect units - special stacking clips are available.
It's an "unmanaged" hub, so...
