Netto (Shop)

Having just moved out of my parents house into my first home with my fiance, I am having to budget and buy the shopping, this is something I have never had to worry about before as I have never had to thought about stocking the cupboards and how it is funded. I now find myself with a tight budget to stock up with for the month and I admit I do shop around and Netto is a fantastic store for the odd treat and the basics. Netto is one of the smaller supermarkets ranked alongside Lidl and Aldi. Netto originates from Yorkshire and first opened in Denmark in 1981 and established itself in the UK in 1990. Since then, it now resides in countries worldwide with large financial backing from a multi billion pound company. Netto is recognisably depicted with the outline of a black Scottie dog holding a basket in its mouth. There's one of these down the road from me (some might say that reflects the quality of the neighbourhood in which I reside....) and so I haven't been able to resist trying them out on a couple of occasions. Fair do's to them in that the stuff is cheap but it can be a hit or miss affair when it comes to quality of product. If you're trying the unknown brands then you might end up saving a lot but find that only a couple of the products are actually edible, thus no saving and another time consuming trip to a different supermarket. We had one of those over-tired fallings out last night. You know the type, little logic, lots of pettiness and even less recollection about what it was really about (and that my friends was before it was even over!) I said nastier things than I meant and so did my husband but thankfully we caught ourselves in time and apologised, kissed and made up. The one thing that has baffled me whilst reading through Ciao reviews has been the volume of support for Netto. I simply cannot believe that so many people are willing to ignore the apalling store standards because the prices are low! I have only ever set foot into our local Netto store once, and I can safely say that I have no intention of ever going back. Perhaps you might find it useful and/or amusing to hear of my experiences in this European shopping nightmare... The store had only been open for three weeks or so, and upon realising that we didn't have enough "easy meals" in the house ... more
