Buffalo Linkstation Pro Duo LS-W2.0TGL/R1
Review of Buffalo LinkStation Pro Duo LS-W2.0TGL/R1 by
cport80
Advantages: Very fast, high capacity.
Disadvantages: Pricey, may be outlived by long-life Blu-ray discs.
As our latest project comes to a close and we face losing any unused capital we again raise the idea of network storage with the boss. It's something we have mentioned repeatedly and suddenly find ourselves with an offer of whatever we can get for £1000. Taking our initiative from the US government we decide why buy one device when we could buy two of these? Thus we have one for our network project and finally a decent sized device for our own backups.
... ...The unit is surprisingly compact and although it may look like a midi-sized PC case in the picture it is actually a lot smaller measuring a little over 6 inches high and only 4 inches wide. The back of the case has 2 USB sockets (one to connect to a PC, the other to network a printer). There's also a standard auto-sensing LAN port (10/100/1000 megabit compatible), an on/off switch (which also has an auto setting) and a rather curious, possibly James ...

Time Capsule Saves Your Time, Work and Skin
Review of Apple NAS server by
brunocrosier
Advantages: Massive memory, Beautiful, Works with PCs, Connects to any amount of computers, Printer Compatability
Disadvantages: Price
...other reviews will know - Apple provide the Time Machine software for free with every single mac they sell. This connects to the Time Capsule (Apple NAS server) to backup every single file you've ever created. And the best thing is that it does it automatically. So, unlike the tempramental System Restore feature we see in Vista and XP, your data is completely safe with Time Capsule. The product comes in models of either 500GB or 1TB ... ...is the case with all Apple goods, the only problem is the price. Yet at £170 its hardly a bargain, but it isn't going to burn a hole in your wallet. Besides, losing your work could be much more expensive.

Good product with a few problems
Review of NETGEAR ReadyNAS NV+ RND4410 by
darkchildx
Advantages: speed, storage, share directories
Disadvantages: Permission loss, network lockouts
This product has it's ups and downs. At my company we have been using three of these over the past few years. The over-all shelf-life is great but the product itself has a few probems.
The Good
File storage - Storing files on these devices is easy and simple. You can easily create shares through their web interface and change each folders' permissions with ease.
Speed - The overall transfer speed is really good. You can send various amounts of ... ...Permission Issues - Sometimes these devices like to forget the permissions that have been assigned to them which can cause users to be unable to view or edit the work they have done.
Network Lockouts - Today I have experienced a new problem where al of our internal staff can connect to these drives but anyone logging in via vpn are unable to see them. ...

Review of Iomega StorCenter Pro NAS 150d/1TB by
vetman
Advantages: Excellent at destroying you files
Disadvantages: to numerous to enter, unit lasts abot 2 months and your files are GONE!
...proprietary file system that only Iomega can recover. Not a true Raid 5, but software (controller resident) raid. Controller goes bad, files WILL BE INSTANTLY SCRAMBELLED! . No log files to see what the unit is doing, diagnosing any problem is is impossible. No port to hook up a terminal and issue diagnostic commands, No way to tell what this device is doing, therefore you can't figure out what is wrong!
I am now in serious trouble with clients. ... ...con!!. DO NOT USE THEM
This is a power off, power on, and pray type device.. you better do a lot of praying, or kiss your files goodbye, they are destined for the pit of hell.. this device is a black hole, files go in and they don't come back out. ...

Wouldn't be without it
Review of Buffalo LinkStation Live HS-DH500GL by
smileandnod
Advantages: Quiet, fast, small, easy to set up, easy to use
Disadvantages: Err.......
...by an ethernet cable. Fortunately Buffalo have thought to provide one. Even better, it's a flat one, so will happily run under your carpet if so required. Both Euro and GB type wall plugs are included, as is a CD with software on it.
It looks ok as well, although that's fairly subjective really. I wouldn't mind it sitting on the bookcase in full view, but my wife would.
Setup
Without any intervention at all, it picked up it's IP address from the ... ...away in the background. It is already set up with an area called SHARE, which is, well, the shared area. Without installing any software, or performing any setup of any kind, I was able to open My Network Places (in Windows of course), navigate to my workgroup (called WORKGROUP) and there was the linkstation. I was able to create new folders under SHARE, and copy data to it straight away. Unless you have changed your workgroup name from the default, ...
