Do not buy a LaCie disk ever!
Review of LaCie Ethernet Disk Mini by
lowezno
Advantages: idea
Disadvantages: performance
...specs and even talked to Lacie before purchasing, so I was sure that the promised specs were true.
After many time waiting due to the difficulty of getting this unit in spain, I finally got the drive, and then all the surprises came.
The unit is in general terms very slow; we use a normal ethernet LAN and the performance compared with other drives is very poor. Even the connection via USB is very slow, nothing to do with the [theoric] 400MB speed ... ...I started multiple trheads with Lacie support and all ended in confirming the poor performance of the unit; they do not officially or non-oficially stated at any time this, but followed the typical customer support technique of getting you tired of getting nothing solved.
They sayed for example that this was a 'USB-ethernet connection' which is 'intended to be slower than ethernet', and always ended the support with the instructions for resetting ...

Wouldn't be without it
Review of Buffalo LinkStation Live HS-DH500GL by
smileandnod
Advantages: Quiet, fast, small, easy to set up, easy to use
Disadvantages: Err.......
...by an ethernet cable. Fortunately Buffalo have thought to provide one. Even better, it's a flat one, so will happily run under your carpet if so required. Both Euro and GB type wall plugs are included, as is a CD with software on it.
It looks ok as well, although that's fairly subjective really. I wouldn't mind it sitting on the bookcase in full view, but my wife would.
Setup
Without any intervention at all, it picked up it's IP address from the ... ...away in the background. It is already set up with an area called SHARE, which is, well, the shared area. Without installing any software, or performing any setup of any kind, I was able to open My Network Places (in Windows of course), navigate to my workgroup (called WORKGROUP) and there was the linkstation. I was able to create new folders under SHARE, and copy data to it straight away. Unless you have changed your workgroup name from the default, ...

Buffalo Linkstation Pro Duo LS-W2.0TGL/R1
Review of Buffalo LinkStation Pro Duo LS-W2.0TGL/R1 by
cport80
Advantages: Very fast, high capacity.
Disadvantages: Pricey, may be outlived by long-life Blu-ray discs.
As our latest project comes to a close and we face losing any unused capital we again raise the idea of network storage with the boss. It's something we have mentioned repeatedly and suddenly find ourselves with an offer of whatever we can get for £1000. Taking our initiative from the US government we decide why buy one device when we could buy two of these? Thus we have one for our network project and finally a decent sized device for our own backups.
... ...The unit is surprisingly compact and although it may look like a midi-sized PC case in the picture it is actually a lot smaller measuring a little over 6 inches high and only 4 inches wide. The back of the case has 2 USB sockets (one to connect to a PC, the other to network a printer). There's also a standard auto-sensing LAN port (10/100/1000 megabit compatible), an on/off switch (which also has an auto setting) and a rather curious, possibly James ...

Buffalo LinkStation Live - Easy Network Storage
Review of Buffalo LinkStation Live HS-DH320GL by
davomrmac
Advantages: Easy access to files, claim back computer hard drive space
Disadvantages: Not as fast as a USB2 or Firewire hard drive
...testing the LinkStation Live from Buffalo Technologies. It is availble in sizes up to 1TB. This compact box contains a SATA hard drive and sports a nice front panel with informative status LED's up front. Around the back of the unit you plug in your power cable (the power supply is in the unit itself, so no external brick). The back also sports the 10/100/1000 Mbps ethernet socket, so it is nice to see that Gigabit speeds are supported. When viewing ... ...hides a tiny fan for cooling purposes. In use, you can definitely hear the fan, but is is very quiet, so not intrusive at all. There is also a USB 2.0 port, which is great. It allows you to plug in another hard drive, so you can expand the amount of storage capacity on your network with a standard external hard drive.
Setting up the drive is really easy. Everything is configured via a standard web browser interface. You can set up users and passwords, ...

Time Capsule Saves Your Time, Work and Skin
Review of Apple NAS server by
brunocrosier
Advantages: Massive memory, Beautiful, Works with PCs, Connects to any amount of computers, Printer Compatability
Disadvantages: Price
...other reviews will know - Apple provide the Time Machine software for free with every single mac they sell. This connects to the Time Capsule (Apple NAS server) to backup every single file you've ever created. And the best thing is that it does it automatically. So, unlike the tempramental System Restore feature we see in Vista and XP, your data is completely safe with Time Capsule. The product comes in models of either 500GB or 1TB ... ...is the case with all Apple goods, the only problem is the price. Yet at £170 its hardly a bargain, but it isn't going to burn a hole in your wallet. Besides, losing your work could be much more expensive.
