Neutrogena® T/Gel Therapeutic Shampoo, but is it really therapeutic?
I can always remember the time I first ever started to suffer from dry scalp. It was back in 1995 when I returned from my first foreign holiday with a lovely golden tan and showing of to my twin brother. We were having right laugh and started jumping about at my stories of the world abroad. My twin swung his arms with laughter and his thumbnail scraped along my hairline ... ...scalp.
I know it sounds weird but the doctor said that is all it needs a small graze to let shampoos and gels get into and work on drying the skin!
Since then I have tried everything to control it and the only thing that seems to work is T/Gel.

My twin swung his arms with laughter and his thumbnail scraped along my hairline on my fore head and ever since I suffered dry scalp.
I know it sounds weird but the doctor said that is all it needs a small graze to let shampoos and gels get into and work on drying the skin!
Since then I have tried everything to control it and the only thing that seems to work is T/Gel.
In my plight to get red of the constant red line around my hair that was always flaking onto my shirts at work and people commenting on my dandruff, I tried every product possible from Aromatherapy to not washing for a few days!
Aromatherapy was okay but your hair becomes very oily and after a while begins to smell stale.
A recommendation from my hairdresser only made matters worse, she advised me to try Tea Tree shampoo, which only erupted the problem even more.
Recently a friend noticed the sores round my fore head and said why not try T/Gel, I had tried it before and did not seem to think it helped? I was in the chemist and noticed the bottles sitting on the shelf and decided to give it another try.
I bought a 125ml bottle for £4.95, which I thought, was expensive at the time. When I got home I read the instructions carefully and noticed that they recommend only using the shampoo when needed or as recommended by the doc!
I decided to use the shampoo as my main shampoo with in a week and a half the sore around my fore head was healing and the red sores were merely a pink line now and I was happy with my healing process.
As my hair was getting used to the shampoo I noticed that my usually nice and shiny hair was now dull, dry and feeling very brittle. The bottle says treats your scalp cares for your hair, I was not so sure. I cut down the use of the shampoo to twice – three times a week to see if this would help my new problem, things were no better.
I also broke out in a mountain of spots, which is highlighted in the instructions but I did not think it would have been so bad, 27 and I was suffering from severe acne people at work were asking if I was eating lots of fatty products, taking drugs all sorts of things that can bring on eruptions like this.
I was feeling at an all time low and went to the doctor regarding my ongoing problem I was looking for an easy way to deal with my hair, guess what he recommended? Yeah you got it T/Gel! I told him this was what I was using and after discussion and telling him how I used the shampoo the doctor solved all my problems, well my hair problem at least!
He said that I should use another shampoo along with T/Gel and only use T/Gel when I really feel I need to. He recommended that I substitute my usual shampoo with medicated Vosene for times I don’t use T/Gel and the results are fantastic. My hair is again shiny and soft and the dryness is leaving slowly but surely.
So what all is in T/Gel that makes it work so well on hair (if used properly of course).
The ingredient that makes this product so effective is Coal Tar Extract; the aroma of the shampoo is distinctly tar like, it is one of those clean smells that you would relate to a hospital or doctors surgery.
The shampoo is very thick and a small amount is needed for each application and this is when I decided that in fact for such a small bottle at £4.95 it is not all that expensive. I have had the bottle now for 4 weeks and I would sat I have used 4/5th of that so I would say that I have now got another couple of weeks to go, remembering at first that I used it for every application now I use it when needed.
The shampoo can also discolour hair that is blonde or highlighted but this should only be for a short time until your hair gets used to the shampoo.
I am happy with this product but at first the stress caused from the side effects was just adding to my problems! Read the instructions carefully and if not at all sure seek advise from your doc.
Advantages: Relatively cheap Disadvantages: Need to use a lot, makes hair feel dry so a lot of conditioner is needed
I liked the idea of neutrogena as it was advertised as being 'natural' with no frills, it was also quite inexpensive.
The neutrogena didn't really smell of anything, as was to be expected. It didn't lather particularly well and so I had to use quite a lot for each wash. It was, however, easy to rinse. After I had dried my hair it did feel clean, however it felt very dry as well. In fact it felt rather straw-like to be honest.
My hair did start ...

...tar at 2%, but somehow Neutrogena have managed to make it less offensive.
I used T-gel every day for a couple of months, and my psoriasis is now better on my scalp than I can remember, and my hair doesn't look like straw. Infact, it's pretty soft and in nice condidition. My patchy bits have cleared up and I only use the T'Gel now once a week or so to keep the little critters at bay, and I can use normal shampoo and conditioner the rest of the week ... ...part with the money. Another Neutrogena product gets the thumbs up.
NB. This does come with warnings standard I believe to coal tar based products. It may discolour blonde hair, or cause sensitivity to sunlight etc. Which would be a bit of a bugger as sunlight is the one thing guaranteed to shift your psoriasis! But I haven't had any side effects at all. ...
